My Ideal Trade Deadline

Created by: bob123
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 15, 2021
Published: Mar. 15, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Trade 1: First the front office has to inquire about Kuemper's health. Rn I believe he is listed to be a week away and taking into account the two week quarantine period, he should be good to go. However, Jack Campbell needs to be healthy if Freddy is going the other way because we'll be running with Campbell and Hutch for 2 weeks. Also, can we send Hutch to the taxi squad or will he be exposed to waivers? If Keumper is not healthy, Linus Ullmark is another trade target but also is injured rn. If not, we need to hope Freddy can bounce back because I don't see any other external goalie options.

Trade 2: I know lots of people like the HEM line but I'm still thinking of adding to our second or third line. I think if we can add guys who play a more physical game, it can help us in the playoffs. Also, both Foligno and Jenner can play a two way game with some scoring touch. Overall, these guys make us a better playoff team. Idk if Boone Jenner is available, he is somebody who I've targeted because I think he'd be a near perfect fit as a third line center playing on a defensive/checking line (61% of Jenner's starts are in the D zone this year per Hockey Reference).

Trade 3: I don't think I can fit in an Ekholm or Savard after the first two trades. So I'll just add more of a depth defenceman. I know we have Sandin, but adding an experienced player who can play the right side would be good insurance if we lose Brodie, Holl or Bogo to injury. I know Marc Staal and Jamie Oleksiak are also out there so we could target those guys but I went for a righty.

Edit: Don't shred me to pieces in the comments, atleast I tried.
Also, if these moves, were to go down would you change up the lines. Would Nick Robertson get a look? Damn, now that I think about it maybe we should only trade for one forward and let Nick Robertson get a spot. But I'll leave it as it is and see what people think.

I love Boone, and Nick. I do feel we need to upgrade our goalie...so if we cant i honestly don't see the point in the Leafs making any deals till the off season. But these are all good adds to the team Cheers.

Yeah goaltending may be an offseason thing. It's rare to see starting goalies be swapped at the deadline and hindsight is 20/20 but maybe this is something that could have been done last offseason.

All of these deals seem pretty reasonable. You may need to add a bit more in the Columbus trade

It wasnt done because Arizona has Raanta and Hill and does not need another goalie back

I don't think CBJ retain on Boone Jenner. They would on Foligno but not next year on Jenner.

Fair enough. The only reason I thought of Freddy going the other way was because he is making 1 mil in real money so he saves them 8 mil in the offseason. In that case, either a third team would have needed to be involved or I guess Arizona would need to flip him. That does complicate things and could be a reason why this may not be realistic from Arizona's perspective.

Do you think I'd have to add more for them to retain or would they just not entertain the idea?

Actually if they could have made a deal it would have cost them another 1 million this year getting another goalie the did not need. Example if they traded Kuemper for a first and lets say a prospect. Which is what they want I think, that is one more million extra for Andersson

I love the thought put into this and I agree with it all.

Boone and Foligno would really help this team, especially after watching Foligno cause all kinds of issues for the Leafs last year in the play-ins.

Jamie Oleksiak has been a favourite of mine for awhile, but he is a free agent this summer so if he wants to come to Toronto he can in the offseason. I like the addition of Hamonic for depth.

As for the goalies, I’ve been paying attention to Ullmark since the start of the season and I wouldn’t mind overpaying a little to get him. If Kuemper’s injury isn’t much longer lasting then we can’t really go wrong with either of them.

I don’t think Joe Thornton on the first line will get us through the playoffs. I would try to keep Engvall and add something else to the trade if needed.
My lines would look like this:
Hyman - Matthews - Marner
Foligno - Tavares - Nylander
Engvall - Jenner - Mikheyev
Simmonds - Spezza - Boyd
*Thornton, Vesey

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Dermott - Bogo
*Hamonic, Sandin

Kuemper/Ullmark
Campbell
*Hutch

Yeah I'd love to keep Engvall and I think if I traded Vesey instead, the cap numbers would work although then maybe I'd have to add something else to make up the value. Another thing that I just realized is that if Kuemper is the guy we get, then Campbell would be exposed in the expansion draft, that might make Linus Ullmark the safer option. Although, we can work out a trade with Seattle to protect Campbell if that's who they want to take, I think I've already traded away a lot of draft capital so going the safer route and trying to resign Ullmark after the draft could be the better option.

I don't think they would since COVID money, and they will be in the same division next year and you would have to add more.
