I keep seeing this Söderberg trade but the guy is 35.
How is a team that wants to play with speed gonna play that way with 35 year old guys.
It's just a bad fit. It's as bad an idea as trading for PM was last year. Thank god JR is gone. It was well past time. There is no way Hextall does this same bad idea. If they go after an older player it will be Getz in ANA. But even that is doubtful. They really can't add old centers. They already got 2 guys 33+

you do realize younger doesn't mean better right? Matt Cullen was in his late 30's for the penguins for both cup runs. and there's no way penguins are getting Getz unless ANA retains half and pens don't have the assets to make that happen

Matt Cullen is a rare example of a guy who could play that late, and he had a very limited role. Or do you not realize that. They didn't ask him to do a ton, just play defense for 5-6 minutes a night. The only time he ever got real ice time was when people got hurt. They tried to save his legs as much as possible and had a 4th line role.
I hate to break it to you but Söderberg is no Cullen, and the pens aren't looking for a guy to play 4C.
And while I agree the pens probably aren't getting Getz, that really isn't the point. They aren't trying to get older either. They need the younger players with legs. They are already to the point where they are keeping their top 2 centers in the Ozone as much as possible to save their legs. They need guys who are more adapt at playing a full 200 foot game. Not a cullen player who's role was to play in his end and eating up PK for 6-8 minutes a night.

It's a complete fallacy to think Söderberg is that guy. He's not. he's slow.

he averaged over 13 minutes of ice time with pit. and guys like Bonino and others weren't the fastest but they had other things to offer. incase you hadn't noticed the past 3 cup winners didn't win with "speed" there's more to the game than that. if speed was the only thing that mattered then sam Lafferty is a goat

Bonino played with speed. That's not even a debate.
That HBK line blew people off the ice. They were simply faster than everyone else. The whole line was built around speed.
TB won with Speed. I don't know how you get to they didn't. That is one fast team and it's their greatest weapon.

Speed is one of the biggest factors in winning games today. I don't know where you get it's not. Guys like Stutzle have changed teams with pure speed. They are just dangerous on the ice with it.
The whole game is faster today and if you can't skate you're done. Which is why you don't see the old players you use to see. They are weeded out as they can't keep up.

As for his averaged 13 minutes a night, that is very misleading. He got time due to injuries. It bumped him up into 3rd line minutes. They didn't want him playing that much ice time.
Malkin played 57-62 games.
Crosby was pretty healthy only missing like 7 games one year. But Bonino also only played 63 games one year. You add it up and you're playing a lot more minutes.

So Cullen got pressed into roles that put his ice time much higher than what they wanted it. When guys were healthy, he was playing under 10 minutes a night.
Their problem was they were always banged up. If it wasn't a center than it was a winger.
But that was never the intention with him.

Did you read what you just read? the hkb line had speed? NO SH*T maybe because it had two of the leagues fastest skaters on the wings? Bonino is nowhere near a speedy player if you pay attention . he's a smart, savvy player which is why they worked so well. speed isn't the end all be all.

it wasn't all the other two players. Bonino's speed is what made him a great PKer who would score on the PK.
It's just not true that he wasn't a fast player.
