Retooling for Playoffs and the Long Term

Created by: Pony
Team: 2016-17 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 28, 2016
Published: Jan. 3, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Reworking the roster to add depth, as well as make re-signing players easier down the line.

NYI trade: NYI gets a top line winger for Tavares and saves Kulemin's salary at the price of potential and a 2nd.

SJS trade: SJS gets added goalie depth without losing much with how deep their forwards are.

EDM trade: EDM gets another RD and a vet for the blueline for downgrading LD and middle six forward depth.

ARI trade: ARI saves money and gets another young leader under long-term team control for their burgeoning core.

Let me know if you think values are off on individual deals (ie, draft picks should be included)

Oilers would probably lose one of those Dmen in the draft, with Larsson, Sekera and maybe Davidsson on board. Don't know if anyone wants Ryan and his contract never giving up two maybe....Strome and the 40th pick.

Strome's been disappointing this year too, and the Isles have shown a recent willingness to make a splash (Ladd). It might be a case of once bitten, twice shy, but they really need someone that can step up on Tavares' wing.

As far as the Oilers trade goes, they would likely have to choose between Ceci and Davidson on who to protect, but the fact that it's an actual choice at this point just shows you how much they need the depth. Yes, there's a good chance they lose one of the three in the expansion draft, but they would still end up deeper going forward on the back end than they would be if Davidson was taken and the trade hadn't gone through.
