Expectations for 2021-2022

Created by: Leafs_Storm
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 29, 2021
Published: Jun. 5, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Zach Hyman L3 was tried multiple times this season if you're wondering why I'm starting with it. The issue is getting top 6 calibre wingers. Kerfoot with Nylander seems to always work, but then 3rd line is weak. If Hyman goes there, it works too. That leaves the issue of finding a winger for Matthews. You can slot Galchenyuk there if Robertson plays in the AHL, but if he makes the team out of camp (as he did pre-injury this year), then I say give him a shot and see if it sticks.

I considered getting a depth dman and having Liljegren in the top 6, but I though Bogosian was good enough to bring him back and have Liljegren as your 1st man up in case of injury.

Ullmark gets more from some club. Depending on Engvall, Brooks and Malgin to be top 12 starters, not NHL good enough.

Completely agree with everything. Hyman will also probably get more than that. I won't say everything that I would do but you can look at my last few teams I made if you want to know.

People seem really high on Ullmark, but there's no guarantee he's going to be a starter calibre elsewhere (SV% can be inflated behind bad teams that give up shots, or it can be deflated by HD Chances, we don't know what Ullmark will be behind a real team) and teams aren't frivolous with money right now thanks to the flat cap. I think 3.5M is the max a team would bet on him, which Toronto could go to as well.

Hyman could get 5M+, but if he's going to remain a Leaf, I think 4.5M is the most you can go. He chose to be a Leaf after college (he wasn't going to sign with Florida), so I think if any Leaf ever were to take slightly less to stay, it'd be him.

Malgin just had an unreal year in switzerland, very comparable to that of Pius Suter who was fantastic for Chicago. I think he plays opening night because the Leafs want to see if he can be a 40ish point middle-six option. Engvall is a top 12 starter, as evidenced in the playoffs. Hockey IQ isn't the highest on Engvall, but his size, speed, and shot, along with defensive acumen will keep him in the league for a long time in bottom 6 roles. Lastly, Brooks is a player. I've been on this boat for a while, but he's had A LOT of injuries the last few years. If he could stay healthy, I have no doubt he'll stick on the Leafs, and likely would have stuck on the Leafs a while ago if he had health. Keefe also trusts him and has always believed in Brooks, so to think he won't make it frankly seems unlikely.

Also, looked at your last team, and I'd argue Foligno gets more based on his reputation, Goodrow gets more based on his cups now, both by about 1M more even though it's flat cap cuz GMs love those types, and frankly I don't see why Dreidger who is the same age as Ullmark would get much different considering their base SV% this season and teams they were on. Hyman you had get 250K more which is fair, but otherwise don't know why you think that is more reasonable tan 4.25K, which frankly doesnt affect my cap at all.
