I read on Twitter last night that Ian Clark hinted at Vancouver possibly taking a goalie in the draft this year. I then saw this morning he said he expects DiPietro to come into camp and compete for a job, so I really don’t know what’s going on.
Here’s my take on drafting a goalie though.
You have 2 goalies to choose from in the 1st round. Jesper Wallstedt and Sebastian Cossa. JW is ranked very high on some boards, while SC seems to be a later round pick, if not early 2nd. Jim Benning said he was going to “be aggressive” this off season, so why not go for the gusto and snag Wallstedt.
You might be saying, whoa whoa whoa, you already have Demko, why draft Wallstedt. It’s simple. Good, cheap goaltending. Let’s assume Wallstedt takes 2-3 years to be NHL ready, that will give you a nice tandem for the final 2-3 years of Demkos contract. Once Demkos contact is up, you can then re-sign both Demko and Wallstedt or decide to keep one.
The trade is simple, swap 9 for 12. Usually when a team jumps up, they give up a 2nd. The perfect example of that is in 2019 when Arizona traded a 1st and 2nd to Philadelphia, to move from 14 to 11 and select Victor Soderstrom. The same goes here, except I’ve added Zadorov in the package. So instead of Chicago sending Vancouver a 2nd to move up, only for Vancouver to send one back for Zadorov, Chicago just keeps the picks. You following?
Now for the cap dump. Eriksson is on an expiring deal, with a $6 million cap hit. His real money owed is only $3 million. Chicago has plenty of cap space with Shaw and Seabrook retired/LTIR, and can use that to their advantage. Vancouver sends DiPietro and a 2nd for Chicago taking Eriksson.
*All this blows up in my face if Ottawa or Calgary or even a top 8 team take Wallstedt*
I could see OTT take him, since they don’t really have a goalie.
I wouldn’t mind Kerfoot as the 3C. I’ve left him in the LTIR so you can see just how much cap space there is to acquire a 3C.
I believe one if not both of Edler and Hamonic will be back. Because of the Zadorov acquisition, I’ve signed the LD, and longest tenured player.
What is the asking price from Toronto? They’ll probably leave him unprotected, so I assume they’ll settle for less than what they actually want. A 3rd?
If we take a goalie, I would expect it to be Cossa. I think Wallstedt is fantastic but considering the people picking in front of us, particularly Ottawa and San Jose who need a goalie desperately more than we do, I would expect Wallstedt to be gone by then. I could see Benning trying to get another first but I don't think the Canucks have an asset that can bring that value without affecting the future composition of the team (e.g Hoglander or Rathbone).
The value is close, we don't really have a need for Di Pietro and would prob be more inclined to take juuolevi and you trade di Pietro somewhere else. Stan loves a good top 10 bust.
