Description
Here's my take on what a decent oilers off season could look like. Salary dump to Detroit is simple enough. From a few articles I read, seemed like the rangers have interest in Kassian at the right price. Hoping that would work out alright, still a little room to possibly retain a bit more salary if needed and NYR have multiple fourth round picks.
I would have deals in place for RNH, Larsson and Smith as to avoid having to protect them from the expansion draft.
I would protect Mcdavid, Draisatl, Yamamoto, Puljujarvi, Nurse, Klefbom, Jones, Bear and Skinner.
I know almost every team would want to sign Hamilton but I'm thinking he sees what Barrie did here and the opportunity to play with the best two players in the league persuade him to sign with the oilers. Also if I couldn't sign Hamilton I would probably be putting that money towards Barrie. Hoffman is a bit of a wild card, he doesn't drive play well but he can score goals which I think would work well with Mcdavid. I also think Ullmark is a really good goalie that could be the future starter for Edmonton.
Project to have $19 million in cap space the next season so enough money there to get Nurse and Puljujarvi signed long term. I wouldn't bring back kahun and Russell to make room for younger players. Archibald would have to take a slight pay cut or be replaced by someone cheaper. And if smith comes back after this season, should be for a mill or less. Bear would be a good candidate to be traded this year to recoup some assets if Bouchard takes a step forward. Nurse I expect to get close to $2 million raise and puljujarvi anywhere from 2-5.

Rangers would only acquire Kassian with 50% retention.

He's not worth the term or cap hit.

Koskinen is of no use to Detroit, they already have two goalies.

Without Koskinen the return for Neal is reasonable, if you want to dump Koskinen too you'll have to add sweeteners (Lavoie for instance).

Oh, and make the 2nd in '22 instead of '23.

That's not unreasonable, might even be able to add to the Detroit deal to have them retain some salary.

Oilers would have to pay quite a premium for all that cap DET is eating. Not sure it's something Holland wants to do.

Considering I'm a Detroit fan in not opposed to that, if I was making that deal as Detroit I would just buy out koskinen or bury him in the minors. Making the 2nd a 2022 would be really tough for the oilers as they wouldn't be picking until the third round, this way they have s little more balance for the next few drafts. I also don't think they could afford to give up a forward prospect but maybe a player like Jones could be added. In my perfect world they oilers send broberg but we know that's not going to happen.

They don't have time to wait to draft prospects and hope they develop. They really need to get into the win now mode before mcdavid and draisatl hit UFA.

Whether Koskinen is bought out or not he still has to be paid and the cap doesn't go away. His salary alone is almost 50% higher than Staal and he netted a 2nd.

    A 2nd in '23 is worth less than a 2nd in '22.

Caleb Jones doesn't really help Detroit either, he isn't the type of defender Detroit needs on LD. There are much better options to be had on that spot. It would have to be a player that's exempt from waivers for at least one more year and has a realistic chance of making the team after that.

I'd rather decline this deal and try for Tyler Johnson instead if it turns into a haggling game. Johnson at least plays centre and would be much more useful than Neal would.

I'm not opposed to it, just like every trade to ever go through AGM there would have to be fine tuning. Could also possibly turn the second into a first and have them broker some salary for Kassian as well. Really there are a ton of possibilities, all depends if Yzerman has the permission to spend useless money like that. And maybe they start the conversation with s player like broberg and save a couple picks. I just didn't want to post that because every single oilers fan would be on here roasting it.

Yzerman has said that he won't take on cap dumps unless it's a player that is useful.

I expect deals like Gardiner and/or Gostisbehere and centres like Johnson to be on his radar. I really don't see deals for wingers to be a priority, unless Yzerman plans to let both Svechnikov and Smith walk.

I didn't know that to be honest, I would just like to see them at least use the cap to their advantage while it stays flat.

In this scenario there could be other teams that would take this cap dump like NJ or Seattle, I just go with Detroit because they are my team.

So do I, but taking picks for players that needs to be bought out doesn't help the team for at least 5 years. 5 years is what it takes before the players those picks generate can be expected to make a difference for the Wings.

Detroit already have Abdelkader on the books for 5 more years and buying out Neal would be for 4 years. In that timeframe Larkin needs a raise, so does Zadina and Raymond and Rasmussen and Johansson and Seider and Viro and a few others.

Taking on Tyler Johnsson would fill an organisational need and make the team better from day one and the cap and money is gone in only three years due to not needing a buyout. He would also get us a better return due both to his three years but also his team desperately needing the cap space.

4 years at 5 mill to an almost 32 year old Hoffman, just keep Neal at that point. This bottom 6 is arguably worse than last year. Lavoie is no guarantee.

I’d keep kass put him back next to mcdavid to push the depth down a spot in an effort to balance the scoring a bit more. I’d resign Barrie before going after Hamilton because it’s a very expensive chance to take and we already know and seen Barrie mesh well with the group.

Thinking about it, probably sign him to a two year deal, bottom 6 can't get any worse than last year just not a ton of options out there to make the team better and I would rather give the young guys a chance than have nygard and haas doing nothing.

Also could have nuge as the third line centre, either way this team is better than last year

Nygard and Haas are both gone to Europe. The Kahun money plus cap space could be spent on a Bjustad and Goodrow

I could have easily just thrown them in there as signings, but they might get better offers from more desirable locations. I feel like I pushed my luck with ullmark and Hamilton. Edmonton isn't the most desirable of destinations, but using the million for kahun (who I don't really like), and the cap space there might be an option for 3.5 mill that would improve the team. I would expect Holloway to take kahuns spot next season. I would also hope Holloway plays in Bakersfield next season if he is eligible as he had 35 points in 23 games with Wisconsin last season.
