New Captain of the Mountains

Created by: Leafs_Storm
Team: 2021-22 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 15, 2021
Published: Jul. 15, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
At forward added a mix of defensive veterans, offensive players, and offensive players with a history of good underlying results.

I assume Ryan Graves gets taken, so in his place added another giant defenseman who can fit in the top 4 at a similar price, but is more physical. Then added Kulikov for defensive depth and more veteran presence.

It was said they felt they needed more "grit" on defense with EJ injured in the playoffs and after the Ian Cole trade to open a spot for Byram, so I added that.

Vomit, Glendening, Gusev and Tatar are awful, just play LOC who is a lock for next year, Kaut (who should be a lock), and a better bottom 6 guy in your Landy walks scenario (which he won’t his agent is just negotiating in the press). Kulikov isn’t needed as they have Timmins and MacDonald. Oleksiak is interesting, but in a year Timmins and Barron could be better.

Personally, I would take Tatar. He's a consistent 50 point forward who has better defensive results than you'd think. Gusev is a 1 way offensive player/PP guy, Glendening is a defensive 4C/PK Specialist. I wouldn't really want either, but at those prices, it gives you flexibility if you want a defensive player vs offensive player. Kaut I like and thought about including but the only opening was L4 and why make a good prospect play 8 min a night instead of 20+ to learn in the A. Timmins is young and I like him, but again, Sakic said they want more tough/defensive defensemen. He's a pure defensive defensemen, Timmins MacDonald are not that. Oleksiak is a 6'7" 250 lbs top 4 dman who is physical and fast. He is what Sakic is looking for, although Barron is great he's not top 4 at age 20, and Timmins might be but you can always trade oleksiak after a year.

Lastly, Avs have reported to have offered about 5.25Mx8years. That's hilariously low, that I'd be insulted if I was landeskog. That's why i have him walking.

Tatar is so famous for disappearing in the playoffs he was just outright scratched by MTL, why waste cap space and playing time on a cap contender for a guy that doesn’t produce when it matters most, and it’s not like it was just this year. Gusev scored 4 goals last year and plays zero defense about the last thing a cup contender needs in their bottom 6. And now with the Graves trade and whomever gets taken in the XD (Donskoi) they just freed up $7M so hopefully Landy gets signed and it isn’t an issue.
