Yes we McCann

Created by: WilmaTheGreat
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 17, 2021
Published: Jul. 17, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A big shakeup upfront to increase scoring depth. Counting on a Hall rebound to upgrade over Hyman and bring in a player who could drive offence on his own. Third line gets a makeover, and comes in cheap with strong two way play. Gally gets another “show me” contract for a full season on a line he clicked with.

Defence remains intact with Dermott to create room for Sandin as regular.

Halak as backup for some playoff experience on a cheap deal.

Note that the team likely has a rough 2022 offseason with lots of key RFAs (McCann, Appleton, Sandin) and UFAs (Reilly, Campbell).

A bit unlikely given he just resigned but fits a need for both teams (I.e., leafs get middle six forward; Winnipeg gets D depth with top 4 upside).

I can't see Winnipeg having any interest. They have more than enough bottom pairing D and Morrissey, Heinola, Samberg and Stanley would all be ahead of Dermott.

Does it change if it’s Holl? I toyed with the idea of him instead since he’ll have more near term value (plays top 4 mins for Toronto) and salary works better. From the WPG games I saw last year I’d think he’s ahead of all you mentioned but Morrissey (at least in 2022)

Then Dermott slides to RD for Leafs. Likely no pick in that case - becomes a one-for-one.

I wouldn't think so. Holl plays top 4 in Toronto out of necessity, he's not a true top 4 guy. Taking low end defenders and playing them above where they should be is what Winnipeg is currently doing. If the Jets are moving a decent roster player they need to be upgrading their defense, notgetting more of the same.

But I do know that the Jets would need more than Appleton to get a true top 4 D.

Alas, the search continues for both teams

Just to be clear, with the leafs trading for McCann they will be protecting 7-3-1 (34,91,88,16,McCann,15,24/47) (44,78,8) (36) Kerfoot isent gonna get claimed theyd be stupid not to protect him in this format. I think the plan is to protect Kerfoot, Seattle takes Dermott, trade Kerfoot for another top 6 winger/1b goalie (Keumper/Garland/Bertuzzi)

Thinking was inspired by Jonas Siegel’s piece in The Athletic this afternoon:

“With the expectation that Holl will be protected, it appears the Leafs will go with an eight-skater, one-goalie protection scheme for Wednesday’s expansion draft. (Joining Holl will presumably be Matthews, Tavares, Nylander, Mitch Marner, Morgan Rielly, Jake Muzzin, T.J. Brodie and Jack Campbell.)

That would leave McCann exposed alongside Kerfoot. Since it’s unlikely the Leafs would trade for McCann just to lose him to Seattle, it seems likely that a side deal with the Kraken has been worked out — one that has Kerfoot landing in Seattle. (Such a deal could also theoretically include Travis Dermott being the Kraken’s pick, though that seems unlikely given McCann’s and Kerfoot’s similar-ish profiles.)”

nvm, just saw Elliot Friedman say they went 4-4-1 which seems rly stupid to me. Would rather protect Holl than the guy u just acquired and a guy with decent trade value. Must be a side deal worked out where they take Kerfoot.

So basically exactly the line from the article you said I shouldn’t believe? Lol
