Description
With all of the Landeskog doom and gloom, I had an interesting idea if he walked. I'm not sure what the cost would be to get Laine from Columbus but a pick/prospect deal would get into the ballpark for a guy how has had a rough couple of years. There could be potential to add a bit more if needed. A 5 year contract would be best to get the best value out of the trade for Colorado in the hopes he turns things around in a better system. Alternatively could be a bridge contract if they want to mitigate the risk.

So they aren't willing to give one of the best wingers and their captain that kind of money but they will trade a ton of high assets to sign a dude who sucks for that much?

    23 vs 28.

also it sounds like landy wants more than that and on a 8 year contract instead of a 5 year contract.

There are a lot of bad players who are 23 if you only care about age. This is just taking a hard decision and following it up with a terrible one.

this is all a perspective of age. I don't think the Avs would bat an eye to pay Landy 8~9M plus for 5 years if he was 5 years younger. the price tag issue with Landy is that he will be entering his mid 30's by the end of the deal which will almost certainly not be worth that much. Laine will be fully in his prime for the extent of this deal which makes it worthwhile. In regard to cost of the trade, Columbus in't going to give him up for nothing. even though he had a bad year, they could easily just hold onto him and take the risk that he is going to be better under a new coach. Obviously, Landy is plan A but if he wants 9M for 7 years, Avs are better off letting him walk.

I think all of this is in your head.

The Avs have price points at differing terms that they can't go past with Landy, its that simple. They will give him AAV or Term but not both, he will have to compromise if he wants to stay. So far it seems he doesn't want to comprimise so he will see if another team will give him both.

You are completely missing the whole point out of the reports you are referencing and what they are designed to do.

Also, I don't think you can say outright is Laine a bad player. He put up multiple 30 goal seasons which isn't something that just happens by accident. I think he just was a terrible fit for the Columbus system and will (hopefully) bounce back under a different system. Is there a risk he doesn't bounce back, absolutely. but that is the same with any trade.
