Description
Welcome to the 2021 NHL draft! It is that time of year again, and today is the first round of the NHL draft! I've spent months researching and analyzing 100+ prospects, and will be doing a two round mock draft. Please leave a comment down below with all your opinions. Remember, this is not my draft rankings, but instead who I believe each team will choose. Enjoy the draft tonight!
ROUND 1TEAMORIGINALPLAYERDETAILS
Logo of the Buffalo Sabres-Welcome to the 2021 NHL draft! The Buffalo Sabres kick things off with the projected first overall pick Owen Power. Although this years first overall pick isn't as solidified as other years, Power has been able to seperate himself from the rest of the competition, and is drawing comparisons to Victor Headman. The Sabres look like they are going back into full rebuild mode, so they can use help everywhere.
Logo of the Seattle Kraken-The first selection in Kraken history, and GM Ron Francis goes up to the podium and selects potential 1st line 2 way stud Matty Berniers. Berniers played a massive defensive role for the gold medal Americans at the WJC, and his offensive game is nothing to laugh at either. Although Berniers might not be the best player available skill wise, it is hard to pass up on a potential 1c who possesses great leadership abilities.
Logo of the Anaheim Ducks-The Ducks have done a very nice job the last few seasons in restocking their prospect cupboard, but they could sure use a bonified sniper, and Guenther is exactly that. Arguably the best shot in the draft, Guenther will be able to put up monster numbers with Trevor Zegras setting him up. Although Eklund might be the best player available, the ducks decided to go with the winger who fits their team the best.
Logo of the New Jersey Devils-The Devils are up, and I'm certain they will go with a defender, it just depends which one between Edvinsson, Clarke, and Hughes. In the end, Jack's influence over the team wins out, and they select his brother Luke who is heading to Michigan. Although Luke has a lot of things to sort out in the defensive end, he has the skill set to be a fantastic two way defender, something his brother Quinn is not. Luke and Jack will lead the Devils for years to come.
Logo of the Columbus Blue Jackets-The Jackets get an absolute steal in Simon Edvinsson at 5. IMO, the best defender in the draft, with the uncertanity of Seth Jones, the Blue Jackets can fill the hole he will leave almost immediately, and he most likely will be better than the notorious Jones. At 6'5 207, Edvinsson still has time to grow, and once he does, watch out. His skating and puck handeling are already at an elite level.
Logo of the Detroit Red Wings-Another steal, and the off-season just keeps getting better for Stevie Y. Eklund is smaller at 5'10, but boy is he good. He is equally as good of a playmaker as he is a goal scorer, and he can play at both ends of the ice since he played in the SHL this season. Eklund could be the best player to come out of this draft.
Logo of the San Jose Sharks-Loaned from the OHL, Clarke played in the Slovakian league for Nove Zamkey, and he didn't disappoint. After picking Wiesblatt and Bordeleau with their first two picks last year, the sharks go to the back end and pick up one of the best defenders in the class.
Logo of the Los Angeles Kings-The rich get richer, and the LA Kings select offensive mastermind Kent Johnson. Although Johnson can tend to do too much with the puck at times, this is coachable, and he should be able to join the likes of Byfield and Turcotte at the top of the Kings prospect pool. Expect one more year at UMich before stepping up into the pros.
Logo of the Vancouver Canucks-The Canucks select the big framed, hardnosed center / winger in McTavish. Mason played for Olten in the second tier swiss league, and put up very respectable numbers. McTavish isn't affraid to go to the dirty areas, and the Canucks can use a player of his versitility. If the Canucks do not go McTavish, expect them to look at Lucius.
Logo of the Ottawa Senators-The first goaltender goes off the board at 10, and the Senators grab their goalie of the future in Wallstedt. He actually has "wall" in his name, and that just shows how good this kid is. He is a bigger goalie, however he doens't just let the puck hit him, but instead is very technically controlled like a Carey Price. In terms of NHL readiness, Wallstedt unlike most goalie prospects is closer to making the NHL than not making the NHL. Expect Wallstedt to go very high in this years draft.
Logo of the Arizona Coyotes-
Draft Pick Forfeited
Logo of the Chicago Blackhawks-I was deciding between Svechkov and Lucius for this pick, however I think the Blackhawks surprise a lot of people with this pick and pick the two way Svechkov. Fedor is arguably the best defensive minded player in the draft, however his offence is top notch as well. He can be an elite player on the PP and PK, making him a valuable asset to all teams. Despite some critics who are down on his offensive game, Fyodor was still able to put up a PPG in Russia's Jr. ranks.
Logo of the Calgary Flames-Potentially the first big surprise of the draft, the Flames select skilled defender Corson Ceulemans from the AJHL's Brooks Bandits. With Corson playing right in the Flames backyard, this will have given them all the time in the world to scout him, but even if you take that away, Ceulemans remains one of the top prospects in this draft. The Flames used their last two first round picks on forwards, and other than Connor Mackey there is no defense help on the way. The loss of their captain Mark Giorodano will also force them to go to the backend.
Logo of the Philadelphia Flyers-Chaz Lucius from the USNTDP falls right into the Flyers hands at 14, and they will grab him as fast as they can. Chaz called himself the best goal scorer in the draft, and although some may say that's not true, others would say that is completely correct. Lucius went down at the beginning of the season with a knee injury, but once he came back after the surgery, he had improved, and was back to dominating the league.
Logo of the Dallas Stars-The Stars drafted physical Mavrik Bourque with their 2020 1st, however they elect to go back to the forward well, and select the KHL winger Chibrikov. He's not the biggest guy at 5'10, however he is crafty and can score. Scouts liked what they saw from him playing against men all season.
Logo of the New York Rangers-It's no secret the Rangers got thrown around a ton and beaten up last year. The Rangers know they need to get tougher, hence why they signed Goodrow to the deal they did. That trend will continue, when they select the dirty, physical player. Despite this, L'Heureux can score and put up points, and he can join the Rangers as a winger, or a center.
Logo of the St. Louis Blues-Sillinger drops in my mock draft, and St.Louis will be more than happy to add him to their ranks. His skating is a concern, however Sillinger scores goals, and nobody can argue with that. His shot is something scouts love, and Sillinger will be a great top six center for the Blues down the road.
Logo of the Winnipeg Jets-The Jets are in need of help on the backend, and Lambos is the best available defender. Although some people don't like the idea of drafting by position, this waive of players are all so close, that picking Lambos at 18 is a great pick. With the WHL season uncertain, Lambos joined JYP Jr. and struggled to find his game, however the once projected top 3 pick still has a ton of upside, and if he puts everything together, he can easily be a top pairing defender.
Logo of the Nashville Predators-Another surprise this draft, as I have the Predators selected Shattucks St. Mary's defender Scott Morrow. David Poile and the Predators philosophy has always been to build from the back, and after trading Ryan Ellias, and Ekholm potentially being next, they need to restock the defensive depth. Out of the remaining defenders, Morrow has the most raw potential, and I think the Preds will like have the confidence to turn Morrow into a top pairing defender.
Logo of the Edmonton Oilers-With the Oilers defense ready to be injected with youth in Bouchard and Broberg, all signs point to a forward or goalie, and with Cossa on the board, they select the kid who played in Edmonton last year. Cossa is a big, BIG goalie, but he is also very athletic, and is always in the right position. Although Wallstadt is projected to go higher, don't be surprised if Cossa ends up being the first goalie off the board.
Logo of the Boston Bruins-The Bruins should be looking to go forward at 21, and although Logan Stankoven would be a great option for them, Raty seems to be a more Sweeney pick. Raty was once projected to be the first overall pick, but he only put up 6 points in 35 games for Karapat. However, he was only getting bottom six minutes, and many people believe he still has 1st line center potential. Great value pick for the Bruins
Logo of the Minnesota Wild-It's between Olausson and Othmann imo, but with Kaprizov and Boldy on the left, the Wild select the RW in Olausson. He's got the size and skating combination that is so intriguing, and if he adds some weight, he could be a tremendous top six option for the Wild.
Logo of the Detroit Red WingsLogo of the Washington CapitalsWell well well. The Red Wings pick up the falling Fabian Lysell at 23, and this could be a boom or bust pick. Similar to Noel Gunler, Lysell had a lot of off ice issues this season with Lulea, and scouts have questioned his character. Despite this, he is one of the elite offensive players in this draft, and if I'm right and he does drop, my money is on the Wings or Hurricanes to grab him up.
Logo of the Florida Panthers-One of the steals in the draft IMO, Othmann, just like McTavish, played for Olten in the second tier swiss league, however he actually had more points. He competes hard every shift, and the Panthers will look forward to him joining their forward group in the near future.
Logo of the Columbus Blue JacketsLogo of the Toronto Maple LeafsA favorite of mine, Pinelli could potentially be a top 15 pick, however if he falls to the Jackets, I think they will take him. Pinelli has the potential to be an elite playmaking center whos very responsible defensively. The Jackets are also in desperate need of centers.
Logo of the Minnesota WildLogo of the Pittsburgh PenguinsWith the Wild selecting Olausson with the 22nd pick, they switch to the backend and select Russian defensive defender Daniil Chayka. Chayka played in the KHL, for CSKA Moscow, and played very solid. He doesn't have a ton of offensive upside, however his defensive game is top notch.
Logo of the Carolina Hurricanes-What a surprise. An elite talent dropping because of his size. Carolina has done a tremendous job drafting the last few years, and they will pick up another potential star in Logan Stankoven. Stank stands at 5'7, however that doesn't stop him from being an elite offensive, defensive, and forechecking threat. He might not have the same fire power as Cole Caufield, but his overall game is much more complete. If GMs have learned from Debrincat and Caufield, expect Stankoven to go much higher. However, I don't believe they have.
Logo of the Colorado Avalanche-The Avalanche are one of the deepest teams in the NHL, and have put together a very nice, well rounded, prospect pool. This allows them to go with the best player available, and in my opinion, that is Samu Tuomaala. Tuomaala has one of the highest offensive ceilings in the draft, and with the uncertantily behind Landeskog, this is a perfect pick for Joe Sakic.
Logo of the New Jersey DevilsLogo of the New York IslandersArguably the best goal scorer in the draft, Coronato drops to the Devils at 29 and they are pumped. Although they drafted Holtz last year, there is no rule that states you can only have 1 elite goal scorer on their team, and with Hughes and Hischier down the middle, Holtz and Coronato can light up the league together.
Logo of the Vegas Golden Knights-I'm sure the Golden Knights will be looking for defenders at 30, but with Pastujov on the board, I think this is a perfect pick for Vegas. His skating is a weakness, but when you lead the USNTDP in goals, you're doing something right. Sasha is a Notre Dame commit.
Logo of the Montreal Canadiens-The Habs are in desperate need of D prospects even after selecting Guhle last year, and although they are looking for RHD, non are available at this point in the draft, so they go with Sean Behrens from the USNTDP. Behrens has elite offensive instincts, but is also great defensively, and can play in all situations. Behrens gave Luke Hughes the freedom to play up the ice. It will be another year where the Canadiens ignor the "Q", and don't pick Bolduc or Bourgault.
Logo of the Columbus Blue JacketsLogo of the Tampa Bay LightningTo finish off the first round, I have the Jackets selecting another Russian, Prohkor Poltapov. We are well aware that Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen loves players from across the sea, and Poltapov has a ton of potential. One of my favorite players in the class, Poltapov is one of the hardest working players in the draft, and on top of that has a crazy amount of skill. Great final pick by the Jackets to end off day 1.
ROUND 2TEAMORIGINALPLAYERDETAILS
Logo of the Buffalo Sabres-Welcome to day 2 of the NHL Entry Draft! The Buffalo Sabres start things off with the 33rd pick, and select 1st round talent Zachary Bolduc. After selecting Power, the Sabres know they need to replace at least one of Eichel or Reinhart, potentially both, so they select the Rimouski product Bolduc.
Logo of the Anaheim Ducks-It was not my plan to have Bourgault fall out of the first round, but that's just how the NHL draft works! The Ducks will be more than happy to select Bourgault, as he can play both the wing and center. The Ducks have made a habit out of drafting French Canadians the last few years.
Logo of the Seattle Kraken-The Kraken picked up two-way pivot Matty Berniers second overall, and now they pick up the defender, Stanislav Svozil from the Czech league. He had to focus on his defensive game playing the men's league, however there is more offence.
Logo of the Vegas Golden KnightsLogo of the New Jersey DevilsSamoskevich played on a stacked Chicago Steel team, however didn't put up the same amount of points as other Steel players. However at times, he looked like a top 15 pick. Either way, the Golden Knights will pick up a very solid C/W.
Logo of the Arizona CoyotesLogo of the Columbus Blue JacketsThe Coyotes first pick in this years draft, and they select who I believe is a first round talent, Simon Robertsson. His size, speed, and work ethic all helped him succeed in Sweden's top league.
Logo of the Detroit Red Wings-The Red Wings might as well just be named Team Sweden in a few years if this happens. 7 of the top 10 Red Wing's prospects named by The Hockey News in their future watch were Swedish, and now you add Eklund, Lysell, and Stromgren, and this is getting ridiculous. However, Stromgren is an absolute beast, and the Wings can wait for him to put all his tools together.
Logo of the Ottawa SenatorsLogo of the San Jose SharksThe Senators have a few options with their first pick on day 2, however they go with the best player available and select Evan Nause, the defender from the Ramparts.
Logo of the Nashville PredatorsLogo of the Los Angeles KingsIsak Rosen has the size and skill to be a top six player, but evaluators don't know exactly whether he can be a top six, or if he will be better for the middle six. Either way, with the Predators going into rebuild mode, Rosen is a nice step in the right direction.
Logo of the Vancouver Canucks-Buium goes a little higher than expected because it's Jim Benning and the Canucks, however I like his game a lot. The one knock he had going into the season was his skating, but he worked hard to fix that, and now he is in prime position to become the top blueliner in Denver.
Logo of the Ottawa Senators-The Senators are so stacked in terms of prospects, they can even start to look for more role players. Boucher however, can be much more than a role player. People compare him to Tom Wilson, because even if he is not scoring, he makes his presence known in the game. Boucher also has a great work ethic, and great skills for a PWF.
Logo of the Arizona Coyotes-The second pick for the Coyotes, and they elect to go with the bulldog like Dylan Duke. Duke reminds me of a Brendan Gallagher, as he is also going to the oppositions crease and getting mixed up with bigger players. He is constantly working hard, the only thing holding him back is his upside, as evaluators don't know how much more he can grow as a player.
Logo of the Chicago Blackhawks-The Blackhawks are still looking to improve their defence for the future, and Peart, who many see as a first round draft pick, is a great option for them at 44.
Logo of the Calgary Flames-Martino lead the Omaha Lancers in scoring despite missing a chunk of the season. That's how good offensivly he is. After going with a defender in the first round, Martino seems to be a perfect pick for them.
Logo of the Philadelphia Flyers-Grushnikov is one of the hardest players to predict, because he didn't play at all this season. The Flyers will take a chance with this pick, but if he pays off, he is another defender to add to the Flyers solid backend.
Logo of the Dallas Stars-One of the biggest players in the draft, the Stars select 6'6 center Helenius. Samuel played in the Li-Liga last year for one of the worst teams, however he held his own. Finland has been good to the Stars in the past.
Logo of the Detroit Red WingsLogo of the New York RangersFinally, the Red Wings get away from Sweden, and select their first blueliner. Zellweger has been rising of the draft board as of late, and he will look really nice in red.
Logo of the Los Angeles KingsLogo of the St. Louis BluesA safe pick for the Kings. Olsson plays hard and keeps it simple.
Logo of the Winnipeg Jets-Projected to go late first round/ early second round. Dean falling to the Jets at 50 is a steal. Although I'm not the highest on Dean, he does the little things right, and could be a very nice middle six center.
Logo of the Nashville Predators-The brother of Kesperi, Oliver plays a totally different way. He is up there with Svechkov in terms of top defensive forwards in this draft. Predators putting together a very nice draft so far.
Logo of the New York IslandersLogo of the Edmonton OilersHarrison feels like an islanders pick. Although he was better last year when playing for Oshawa, the bigger ice in Europe really showed he needs to work on his skating. However he has the potential to be a real nice PWF who can score goals by going to the net.
Logo of the Buffalo SabresLogo of the Boston BruinsKisakov is a step below the other Russians taken above him, however he is only 141lbs, meaning he has lots of room to grow and improve his game.
Logo of the Minnesota Wild-This may sound bad, but take it as a good thing, Conner Roulette is the most boring player in the draft. He isn't flashy, but he's a good two-way center, who probably projects as a very good third liner center. Wild will hope there is more here however.
Logo of the Washington Capitals-The Caps first pick of the draft, with former firsts McMichael and Lapierre, the caps should focus on the blueline, and they do so adding the tough, hardnosed Kirsanov. Kirill played in the KHL as an 18 year old.
Logo of the Florida Panthers-The Panthers are back up, and Nolan Allan is a really nice grab. He could be the best shutdown defender in the draft.
Logo of the Toronto Maple Leafs-The Maple Leafs are up for the first time, and they select a favorite of mine, Justin Robidas. The 5'7 center is as hard working as it gets, and although he doesn't have the offensive upside like some other prospects in the draft have, he is a great 200 foot player. Leaf fans will just hope he doesn't end up on Robidas Island with his father...
Logo of the Pittsburgh Penguins-The Penguins are up for the first time, and they just have to select the BPA, and that is Korczak. The Moose Jaw forward is great when given space, however when things get tight, he struggles. The Penguins will hope to help him improve that part of his game.
Logo of the Carolina Hurricanes-The best part about Ufko? He is going to Umass next season. The Minutemen are known for developing defenders, most recently Cale Makar and Zac Jones, and Ryan Ufko could be the next.
Logo of the Arizona CoyotesLogo of the Colorado AvalancheAfter the Coytotes were stripped of their 11th overall pick this year, they have started to make up for it with three 2nd rounders. Matthew Knies struggled in the early going of the season, but went off in the second half. If he played like he did in the second half for the first half, he would have gone much higher.
Logo of the Colorado AvalancheLogo of the New York IslandersThe Aves are in a position here where they can try and select their goalie of the future. Annunen looks promising, however he may never be that true number 1, and drafting the goalie from Sarnia gives them options.
Logo of the Chicago BlackhawksLogo of the Vegas Golden KnightsMaybe he fell a little farther down than expected, but Salminen is a nice get deep in the 2nd round. He's one of the wild cards of the draft, as he barley played last season in Finland.
Logo of the Montreal Canadiens-
After selecting Behrens in the first, the Habs select a RHD with this pick, Jack Bar. He is a Harvard commit, who is big, strong, and has a bomb of a shot. I love this pick for the Habs.
Logo of the Montreal CanadiensLogo of the Tampa Bay LightningTo end of the second round, the Habs select Tristain Broz. He is a University of Minnesota commit, and was a top scorer in the USHL. Montreal has had a great start to the draft. That concludes my 2021 NHL mock draft! I had a ton of fun doing it, and I hope you enjoyed! Leave me your thoughts down below, and enjoy the draft tonight!

If we get both Hughes and Coronato, it doesn't matter who we get with the rest of our picks because that's a win for us. I would rather get 2 d-men in the first round, depending on who's available with our 29th pick, but if Coronato's available we take him.

Thanks for the comment! Yeah I see this as a big win for the Devils. Clarke or Edvinsson might be the better option at 4, but those three are so close, you cant go wrong with Hughes. I was also considering picking a 2nd defender for the Devils, but with Coronato available, I thought they had to take him. Hughes, Mukhamadullin, and Bahl is a solid defense corps alone.
