Important Offseason

Created by: mikeyscav
Team: 2017-18 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 6, 2017
Published: Mar. 6, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Buffalo Sabres fire Dan Bylsma as he seems to have lost the lockerroom and his system doesn't fit Buffalos tools. They hire Lindy Ruff for his second stint as the HC after he is fired from Dallas for mostly their incapablility in net.

No big moves made here, just a bunch of small tweaks to help the roster this year and in the future. Niemi starts as the backup but if he keeps faltering Ullmark can come up, The defense is more responsible and more mobile with the additions of TVR, Guhle, and Weber. The offense stays similar but some older veteran pieces are replaced by young players in Nylander and college FA Aston-Reese

C: Jack Eichel

This team isn't much better if at all than what we have now. I doubt Chicago goes for that trade seeing as it doesn't really help them. Girgs and TVR are valued around the same but Chicago isn't really in need of Girgs at least until after they trade Kruger.

Yannick Weber isn't very good, TVR isn't good enough to be a 2nd pairing guy, the Dallas trade is rather useless unless the Gurianov is a good prospect. I'm not taking a 4mil goalie for the sake of taking him. He hasn't been good in at least 2 to 3 years.

Chicago is tight against the cap yearly and bringing in a young center who will come cheap is something they need. Kruger is most likely going to Vegas and Girg will come around 2 mill less then he costs and plays very similar. They are loaded with young defenders and can move TVR for other help. TVR is a solid shutdown dman that has actually played top-4 minutes for Chicago on many occasions, even playing a little at times on top pairing with Keith. He's also young, cheap and skates well enough and putting him with Bogosian allows Bogosian to worry a little less about defense and let's him show off some of his ability on the offensive side of the play.

Gurianov is the Stars 1st round pick from 2015 and is a very good offensive player. He just came over from Russia and is learning the NA game in the AHL but I believe letting him figure it out in ROCH for another year or two could give us a dazzling offensive piece to potentially replace Kane if he walks. I'll take on Niemi for a year at that albatross contract
to backup Lehner if I can get a nice prospect in return as his money will be off the books before we really need it.

And Yannick Weber has been a good bottom-pairing dman in Nashville this year and I am paying him minimal money to do the exact same thing here till Liljegren/Borgen are ready. This teams biggest improvement would be on defense which is the only thing holding us back at this point

I like how there are no big irrational risky moves to make up for this disappointing season. Getting a top 4 D via trade would be nice but depends if the price is right, not trying to sell big names, maybe for picks??? as well maybe add one more guy to add depth to the bottom 6. Would make next season a lot easier if Nylander and Guhle are NHL ready, only time will tell

Bylysma is not the problem and hasnt lost the locker room. The team isn't talented enough to win consistently, thats it. It's not a magical system that is going to come in and save them, the only thing systems really effect are PP and PK (PP is #3 in the league, PK is 29th but they also have the worst defense which leads to my next point). This defense is literally the worst defense in the league, 30th place, Las Vegas has a better d right now. The offense is also not good enough to carry the traffic cones. ROR 7 mill 44 points, Okposo 6 mill 43 points, Kane 5.25 mill 35 point, Moulson 5 mill 25 points. Eichel has played 25% less games than most of this team and has 42 points, his injury was a huge blow. If need need someone to blame, blame GMTM for trading a ton of D depth for not much in return, Brayden McNabb, Tyler Myers, Nikita Zadorov, Mike Weber, and Mark Pysyk for Dmitry Kulikov, Ryan O`Reilly, Jamie McGinn, Jason Kasdorf, Zach Bogosian, Evander Kane, Hudson Fasching, Nicolas Deslauriers. Yeah we got Kane and ROR out of it (maybe Fasching can develop too) but our D is significantly worse (3 LHD), and for that return 30-40 points in 55 games isnt gunna cut it.

I think Bylsma isn't the biggest problem and I can see where you're coming from. At the end of the day this team is one of the worst 5v5 teams in the league and the only reason we are still afloat is our PP and goaltending. Bylsmas system just seems to not allow the creativity to really show from our players that we need to see. I understand our defense is pretty awful too but there are good players back there that you could get more out of by getting guys like Risto, Bogosian, and Kulikov up in the rush more. Our defense stinks but isn't really getting help from anyone to disguise it a little bit. None of those D we traded really would make this roster much better besides arguing for Zadorov (rather have Oreilly,) Myers (has become super injury prone,) and McNabb who you could make a argukent for. I'm on the fence with Bylsma though, could see him moved for a bigger change which could kickstart team but can also see him get next year until like Thanksgivinf for improvement

Bogosian is really not that good. He cant process the game fast enough. Hes an AHL player with an NHL body. Kulikov is just unfortunate, he's obviously playing hurt. They should just shut him down and sign him to a prove me deal. McNabb and Zadorov are both LHD, with McCabe, that is a vastly different line. Even trading Zadorov away, which i also approve of, and still doing the Kulikov deal leaves in great shape even with Kuli's back. This team is just not gifted creatively. They have Eichel, ROR, Reinhart, Kane, and Ennis who have shown their creativity under Bylysma, but after that its a collection of power forwards. Its not the creativity thats the issue, they just dont have natural finishers aside from Eichel and Kane. ROR and Reinhart are setup men and shouldnt be expected to score 30+. Ennis should but may be to fragile to play at the elite level. Okposo i still believe was a bad signing, for what they paid i want way more out of him and i knew he couldnt deliver.
