Jeez dude, your spending is worse than Trudeau's.
Shattenkirk is going to NY. And thats a good thing; committing 7mil to a PP guy is a terrible idea. Especially since we've got a great PP already. We need a possession defenceman, you feel me?

Secondly, giving 3mil to a fourth line centre in Boyle is suicide in the cap era. I doubt he gets a raise at this point in his career.

Brodin would be sick, but he has insane numbers and a great contract, so I doubt Minny bites. He's a L shot so that would make gardiner expendable.

Losing Carrick is bad asset management too, he's been solid and he still young and developing.

Halak might be a good move

    Valid points.

Shattenkirk: Leafs D is pretty brutal and we're really not going to get a top-2 D any other way without trading someone like Nylander which isn't happening, and shouldn't. I understand throwing money at UFAs isn't always the best idea but I feel like Shatty could have pretty decent longevity and would do great in a system where he plays with guys like Matthews/Nylander/Marner.

Boyle: Edit to be a 2-year deal. I think the AAV is fair; he's still effective when he's on the ice and he will be a UFA by the time Matthews and Marner need new deals. Holds us over while we have cap space and putting the fourth line out isn't a worry if he's there (upgrade over Ben Smith).

Brodin: Figured we would swindle Minny in the deal a little because they're stuck with the Expansion Draft, not the best value but better than losing him or Scandella for nothing. Even so, I made a new thread where JVR goes to NYI for Halak, de Haan, and a 1st which is probably more of a realistic trade, IMO.

Carrick: This was if the Brodin trade happened and we protected Rielly, Gardiner, and Brodin; exposing Carrick. I like him too but it is more-so being a pessimistic Leafs fan than being overly optimistic and being let down - sometimes you lose players you don't want to lose.

    Halak: Tru.
