Why do people think Pettersson is bad because he's the odd man out? He's more than capable of playing top 4 mins. Doesn't score a ton but solid defensively.

The price someone wants to pay depends on more than the quality of the goods.

How badly does the buyer want it?
How desperate is the seller to sell?

PIT have cap issues. PIT have 9 waiver eligible defenders. Detroit have several other options.

That is why Detroit isn't willing to offer more than a 3rd for Pettersson. We can get Schmidt from WPG for a 3rd or being paid to take on Scandella or make an offer for Martinez or chose one of a handfull good options in FA that doesn't cost any pick at all.
