Why are the Sabres paying for Dickinson? Fitzgerald is good D depth and the Sabres can easily find equal players to Dickinson, cheaper. They pass

Honest question, VAN played way better in the 2nd half of the year and if not for their first 20 games would have been a playoff team. I feel like they'd be more likely to stay the course with the current squad and fight back next season? I guess if TJ tells them he doesn't want to resign after next season that may need to be dealt with... but they aren't up against the cap so they would have no problem with keeping the current team together?
