Panarin's number is inflated though, there was no way he was back in Columbus, teams knew that before free agency which created a bit of a bidding war between LA, NY, Fla and destinations that Panarin would agree to go to. None of those teams had the ability to give him an 8th year. If he wanted an 81.5M contract like he got it had to be the 11.64M cap hit, if Johnny wanted a Panarin contract and Calgary can offer the eighth year it's only a 10.1M cap hit, as he's an older UFA than a guy just getting out of RFA that 8th year is important. If he goes to UFA 11.5 isn't out of the question, staying in Calgary there is no reason for them to go that high.
