Realistic Oilers Offseason

Created by: Larth
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 23, 2022
Published: Jun. 23, 2022
Team: 2022-23 Edmonton Oilers
Description
I see Woodcroft running 11F and 7D next year to shelter the younger D men while also letting the younger forwards play with different linemates to build some chemistry.
Intentionally left 2.2 million for trade deadline movement capabilities.
Smith and Skinner sharing the net to get Skinner acclimatized to the NHL pace.
A mid-season cap dump of Kassian would also give the oilers lots more money to make a big deadline splash for a playoff push.
What are your throughts on my imagined offseason?

On LTIR, you don't accrue cap space, so it doesn't make sense to hold on to Kassian. I could see him packaged with a pick, or bought out as his cap hit on buyout is only $667k for next season.

To take full advantage of LTIR, you need to be at cap, so having $2.2m unused doesn't help. I'd find a way to use it.

If you want to accrue cap space, I could see them moving Klefbom's contract with a pick to a team that's already in LTIR. If his contract is insured, no dollar impact to the team taking him on.

If all you get for Puljujarvi is a 3rd and 7th, I would hold on to him, and not sign a player like Phil Kessel. Puljujarvi looked good until Covid, and I don't value a 3rd and 7th at all.

For his rights, they would still need to negotiate and sign a contract with the new team

Puljujarvi is worth way more. Like dealing for a goalie or a dman. No draft pick outside the 1st round would be worth it.
