Can they give Kadri 8M

Description
Apparently they are still making a go at Naz. Compher would probably need to be traded this year, but it works pretty easily. It's next year when things get really tough, so I'm checking that out.

A lot obviously hinges on MacKinnon's deal. If he really takes less, that sure helps. I assume the team already knows his number. We don't, which sucks.

Lehkonen, Byram, and Newhook are the other main unknows. I gave both Byram and Newhook a bridge. The Lehkonen deal might be optimistic, but I know he likes it here.

Anyway, I got Naz at 8.2M to fit, but it all depends on how close or overly optimistic I am on the contracts discussed above.

The question might be: Is it worth it to sign Kadri if it means trading one of Toews or Girard before next year? It's a tough one to answer.

Roster isn’t even big enough, and Lehkonen easily gets more than 3.85. I think you’re looking at an easy 4.5+ for him.

The roster is big enough. Lehkonen might that much, but maybe not. Hence why I covered it in the description.

You have one healthy scratch. The roster is not big enough.

MacDermid plays forward and defense. Bare bones rosters have been done before to meet the opening day cap limit. Saying the roster isn't big enough is wrong. Now is it a concern? Sure. But it isn't a deal breaker.

It quite literally is a deal breaker. The second someone gets injured, the team is in major trouble. You need several healthy scratches on case of several injuries. The best shot is to get someone like Trocheck to replace Kadri, but he’s probably signing in Pitt. Copp is all but confirmed to the Wings.

At anything above 7.5 , I say pass on Kadri, but he won’t accept it, so it’s best to let him move on. Seattle or someone else will give him 10 million a year and watch his production tank.

If it were to be a deal breaker, teams wouldn't have done this in the past. LTIR is one way out of the mess. It's very much a concern though.

Alternatives would be to trade Frankie and bring up Annunen. Or trade Girard or Toews (as mentioned in the description). Or they can trade for warm bodies at 50% retention from a team like the Yotes. Having two reserve players making a combine 800k would help a lot.

In any case, this isn't meant to be the end all. It's to illustrate the ceiling for what they can offer Naz. Will they go this high? Idk. Your guess is as good as mine. Seems they rely want to keep him though.

I agree. I think the easiest way out of the cap mess is to send Girard and/or Compher packing. Girard's injury proved his expendability, and his cap hit is much better used for Byram in the future.

Can they? Yeah, it would be tight.

Should they? IMO negative.

Team depth was huge in the playoffs. Even compromising on $7M, that looks really top heavy. Like putting all the eggs in one basket. McFarland is going with a goalie tandem and trying to get Manson back to beef up the D. I'd prefer they go with Newhook and sign a 3rd liner to back him up. There are a TON of free agent options, and if thoae don't work out, they can still rent a C at the deadline. 18 is ready to breakout if he can just get consistent, top six ice time. Committing several years to Naz just doesn't seem ideal to me.
