Leafs with a few key trades at TDL

Created by: kster34
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 23, 2022
Published: Nov. 24, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Leafs need an impact winger, and maybe a 3rd /4th C that can pop a few goals (Kampf is defensive stopper). Trades assume both teams are selling at TDL. Preds only signed nino to 2 year FA deal so - while not ideal…I could see them moving him if they’re out of the race at TDL
Trades
1.
SJS
  1. Abruzzese, Nick
  2. 2023 3rd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Leafs have to move out a contract, so I added Abruzzese but could be any mid level prospect
2.
TOR
  1. Niederreiter, Nino
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (NSH)
NSH
  1. Hirvonen, Roni
  2. 2023 1st round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Leafs need to move out a contract; assuming 3rd coming back balances out Hirvonen.

Not great value for NSH here. If they move Nino, I think they can do better than this.

Maybe could add another pick or prospect, but I don’t consider him an elite player; just a good, solid winger. And a 1st in next year’s draft is pretty valuable.

Nino's a reliable top six contributor with a team friendly cap hit. I think he could get a 1st. I wouldn't give up NSH's 2nd for Hirvonen.

Bonino will be shopped at the deadline for the best pick we can get for him. This is certainly reasonable.

$4 M for a career 40-50 point guy (albeit 20+ goals) sounds about right, not that team friendly. And it’s only 2 years so he walks at end of next season. I only added Hirvonen (top 5 prospect in our system) b/c we need to move out a contract. Could just downgrade prospect and remove draft pick coming back but Hirvonen has chance to make league next year or year after; typ draft pick is 3 or 4 years away.

He's on a 36 goal pace on a struggling team, with lesser linemates than TOR could offer. For $500K less than what Kerfoot makes, that's a bargain. He wouldn't be a rental either, as TOR would have him next season too, when a lot of UFA departures gives them more cap space, and they don't have much in the way of notable RFAs to re-sign.

I can't see NSH wanting Hirvonen. Doesn't have the size to hang with their big, physical lineup, and the Preds have multiple wing prospects with more potential. Knies and Niemelä are really the only Leafs prospect I could see NSH having some interest in.

Good discussion, and maybe preds won’t trade him but he’s never scored more than 25 (in a lengthy career) so ‘on pace for 36’ seems like an outlier. Hirvonen is a centre but like I said not core piece of trade so he can be removed or replaced; Knies and Niemelä are non starters. I gues preds mgmt has to ask - if (and still a big if, lots can change before TDL) we couldn’t make playoffs this year, what’s going to change next year? And do we want to let potential assets like Neiderreiter walk or try to get something to kickstart rebuild?

Hirvonen's been playing on the wing for awhile, to the best of my knowledge. At his size, I'd be surprised if he gets put at center in the AHL or NHL. Regardless, I don't see him being nearly as valuable to NSH as he would be to TOR.

Even if NSH is out of the playoff picture by the deadline, they're not in any danger of losing Niederreiter for nothing. They could get a nice return for him as a rental, the following season.
