        Nothing about this trade makes sense.

        NJD might trade a pick for the rights to Shattenkirk, but they wouldn't trade a pick AND take on that albatross contract of Orpik. Maybe you would break it down into two trades, but it would likely be a conditional 6th for Shattenkirk's rights, and Orpik plus a 3rd for future considerations. Orpik is a player on the last legs of his career.

        And the Buffalo trade gets worse. Alzner is a free agent, so again you're trading for rights, and rights have no value. Lets not even get into Alzner's value as a player. Vanecek is a B level prospect with little chance of making the NHL, and Ellers has only broken 30 pts once in his career. Reinhart is a year removed from a 23 goal campaign, and will likely reach or surpass those numbers next year.

        Alzner trade was a sign and trade, not that Alzner would do that, but meh... more curious trades have happened in the NHL.
