The Washington Avalanche
I can't see Kadri signing with any team for anything less than 6 years imo.
Also if the Caps sign someone like Kuemper, I'm assuming he's going to be the starter. I'd trade Sammy - 1 more trade value to the right team 2 - based on your signings smaller cap hit
Everything else is great! Hope the Caps do something like this in the offseason

tbf, all armchair gm teams are built for the same reason - fun. this is pretty fun to look at, and gives you an idea of how the caps have drafted in the recent years.

Where to go from here
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>brady_t12</b></div><div>Montreal is the one team I could see having serious interest in Schultz after LTIRing Weber. Plus the cap space from losing Danault and the unknowns with Drouin and Price make it more plausible that the Habs can take on a contract like Schultz's. One year left, reasonable cap hit (maybe just a teensy bit too high, but not a dump by any means). He could quarterback the PP and is not far removed from a couple of cup runs with the Pens. Could be a great guy in the locker room and on the ice for a young competitive team looking to make another deep run.</div></div>
Completely agree with this. Schultz won't be difficult to move given only 1 year remaining and a managable cap hit. We might not get a lot, but I don't think we need to pay anyone to take him.
It also makes sense to keep him for the same reasons, TVR and Jensen are good, but may not be top 4 RHD material. Schultz has 1 year left, management might take a gamble with him. Instead GMBM might pay teams to take Dillion and/or Hags. I think Hags could probably be replaced by a guy like Jonsson-Fjällby, and Dillion seemed pretty ineffective in most games I watched.
Trading Kempny will be near impossible. Best case is he lands back on LTIR somehow.
Its going to be an interesting offseason.

ITS ACTUALLY HAPPENING
I'm a huge Caps fan and tbh I don't think McMichael has what it takes to be a star or even top3 on a team. I see him at most being a James Neal type of player - a servicable second line scorer. He has a scoring touch, but not much else.

I believe Samsonov is a RFA, if drafted he can only sign with Seattle. Of course, unless Washington wants to offer sheet him, which then would make more sense to pay Seattle to take someone else.

Rebuild time
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jimmerisagod</b></div><div>Minnesota is running away jumping after getting rid of Suter</div></div>
Yup, I think Carlson when healthy is probably the better pick and the sexier choice, plus 6 years younger. But Caps need an actual leader right now, their inability to show up and hold other guys in that room accountable seems to be an issue - purely based on my own feelings towards the team.
Suter brings that Niskenin/Orpik pressence that the Caps lack on their blue line since winning the cup in 2018. Even if it's just 1 or 2 more good years left in Suter's tank, I think he'll be a great mentor to the young D. The last 2 years of the contract Caps will 1,000% regret, but I think its necessary evil.

Rebuild time
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ArakinSkywalker</b></div><div>It would be nice to have vanecek, as we do like getting goalies from washington, i don't think kuz is the type of player sakic would target. Plus newhook is worth more to us than another goalie right now so i think colorado declines</div></div>
I think those are all very valid points. My idea behind is is purely the Avs are primed to win, and needs to win in the next 3 yrs. Kuzy, I agree, isn't Sakic's type of player, but I also think he's done very well with another similar Russian in Nichushkin. Kuzy, imo can shiny in the shadows of MacKinnon - sort of like a Malkin to the Crosby.
Newhook, I agree is a very exciting prospect for the Avs, but will take a few years to step into a 2C role if he's capable. I think deep winning teams like the Avs do eventually give away prospects for the need to win immediately.
Not saying it's fair value, I'm no expert. Just saying its a move that makes sense for both teams that should be going very opposite directions.

playoff team...maybe more
@Capitalfail67 - Yeah, unfortunately that's always the case. And yes, you maybe right, perhaps the Coyotes would ask for something to sweeten the pot, but I don't imagine it would be anything significant.
Hopefully GMBM can make Orpik's contract go bye bye, but from his "mentor" comments, it sounds like Caps will have Orpik until the end of his contract.

Capitals Makeover
@netminder71
Understandably this set of bottom 5 D is beyond risky, but I was trying for a different approach - to stack up offense.
Every year in the playoffs you see the cup winners win a different style and teams try to emulate the winning roster in the offseason. But maybe instead of being reactionary, to be proactive and create a new winning formula, and my idea is to just load up forwards. It may crash and burn, but Capitals are always making reactionary moves, it's time for them to be a bit more innovative.
Plus, RHN is a good insurance policy for if Ovie or Kuzy bolts to the KHL, and Kuzy can shift to the wing so RHN can be 2C.

I like the idea, but if Jumbo Joe leaves SJ for a shot at the Cup, it probably won't be to Washington. Eller isn't going to be exposed, Caps just made a trade to get a 4th line guy to expose instead of Eller. And Oshie is going to ask for more, he's not going to take that big of a discount. I like the Theodore idea, but Anaheim isn't going to let Theodore be taken, plus Capitals have a good young D in Lucas Johansen. And Capitals prospect pool runs thin after Vrana, Johansen, and Bowey, so probably not the best idea to trade away yet another 1st round pick.

You're under paying almost on all of your signings. I understand these guys had success with the Pens, But it's about money too for the players. Schultz, Bonino, Kunitz will all want more. And like most comments here, VGK has a lot of goalie options, they really don't need to take Fleury. I see him being traded to another team instead, that'll bring some asset back for the Pens.

That CGY trade is really interesting though. I don't see CGY doing it it's fair value. But even if you get him why sit him on the 4th line? He should be on that 2nd line.</div></div>
Fixed it up.
As for Iggy and Hunwick, I was going for a cheap option yet serviceable players. I felt it might be too early to throw a guy like Johansen in the mix, he needs time in the AHL.

Shatty/Duchene/Ekholm
So in this scenario Vegas takes no one? I imagine one of Grubby or Orlov would definitely be picked up. The Ekholm and Duchene trades would definitely need a pick to go long to the other side, and the Caps are running low on picks. And the right side is super weak! I really want to see the Caps win this year because it doesn't look like there's much they can do to stay competitive next year. They definitely need to fleece someone to make things work. Either way, I think a retool / rebuild is coming.

I hate the Eller trade so much. They could have got a pretty decent bottom 6 UFA with that money. But now we lost two 2nd rounders for a so so 3C whos' a career minus player, and limited our ability to make any significant signings or trades. Eller better be our Bonino for next year's playoffs.
