Shatty/Duchene/Ekholm

Created by: ClockReads2113
Team: 2017-18 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 3, 2017
Published: Mar. 3, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I already heard that Caps have a basic plan in place with COL that if Caps can get Shatty resigned that they will trade Carlson for Duchene or Landeskog. Issue is I doubt Shatty resigns here because he's so set on NYR, but we'll see. So far he seems impressed with the Caps and if they win the Cup he could be willing to stick around. If Caps do this and get Duchene or Landeskog their window is wide open again.

Anyways, that line up is straight dirty. That's a top 9 that can score, consisting of youth, speed, skill, and puck possession. Then the dcore can move the puck yet be defensively reliable. And of course they are backed up by arguably the best goalie in the game. That lineup is good enough to fight for a Cup for another 4 years, probably more.

Trades
1.
COL
  1. Carlson, John
Additional Details:
This is a pretty even trade. COL gets a great top pairing right handed defensemen that has 1 more year on a cheap deal before he'll need a raise. And Caps get a legit top 6 player that can play wing and center for 2 more years before he needs an extension which extends their window. I don't think either side has to add anything but if they do it shouldn't be much,
2.
NSH
  1. Johansson, Marcus
Additional Details:
I imagine WSH might have to add a LITTLE bit more to the Ekholm trade but not much, it's a pretty much even trade. NSH gets a top 6 player they need bad that plays LW, C, RW and can put up 20+ goals and 50+ points. WSH gets 2nd pairing dman that can put up 20+ points.
3.
WSH
  1. 2018 4th round pick (ARI)
ARI
  1. Grubauer, Philipp
  2. Orpik, Brooks
  3. Stephenson, Chandler
Additional Details:
ARI get a young, very good, cheap goalie for the future with Grubauer.

They also get Stephenson who is a young, cheap, speedy, 2 way, NHL ready prospect with 3rd line potential. Should fit in well with those young guys.

Orpik is getting paid $3M more than he should for 2 more years, BUT he's still proving he's a bottom 3 dman. He leads the league in +/- which is a dumb stat but impressive for a guy that was supposed to be washed up. Plus, he's a great leader for that young ARI team. In return ARI gets 2 good young guys to boot.

Where did you hear that because I can't see Colorado trading for another right handed defenseman.

It's because Barrie hasn't adapted well to Bednar's system after getting a pretty good contract. With Carlson in, Barrie would be out.

Yeah, but with COL rebuilding, I can't see them making a trade that only makes their core older. Nice idea, but not a fit. I was thinking about Barrie for Bowey, Orpik, and perhaps Vrana.

That's a good point but COL isn't the smartest and they will want to be competitive as quick as possible. All they want is defense. If you have a 1-2 of Carlson Barrie on your 1st and 2nd pairing that's a good start.

That Barrie trade is interesting but I think it's overkill. You're giving away a top line and top pairing prospect for a 3 more years of Barrie. I don't know if that's worth it.

Can't see Avs trading two years of Duchene for one year of Carlsson. Some youth has to come back to Avs also. Like the Orpik trade for both teams.

They'll resign him, they have plenty of space.

If he isn't moved then yes. We can trade him before hand.

So in this scenario Vegas takes no one? I imagine one of Grubby or Orlov would definitely be picked up. The Ekholm and Duchene trades would definitely need a pick to go long to the other side, and the Caps are running low on picks. And the right side is super weak! I really want to see the Caps win this year because it doesn't look like there's much they can do to stay competitive next year. They definitely need to fleece someone to make things work. Either way, I think a retool / rebuild is coming.
