2016 Replay

Created by: HillbillyPenguin88
Team: 2022-23 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 21, 2023
Published: Feb. 21, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
*I would be open to a coaching change( I don't think that Sullivan is a bad coach but a new voice and philosophy is needed IMO)

*Burying McGinn (hoping that some team would be silly enough to claim him) would allow the Penguins to call up a younger player like Nylander or Puustinen

*The Carter situation is the biggest problem w/ this team and I don't see any solution. This is easily Hextall's biggest mistake. I'm open to scratching him but I doubt it happens (maybe w/ a new coach)

*Third line Center and better backup goalie are desperately needed
Trades
1.
DAL
  1. Friedman, Mark
  2. Kapanen, Kasperi

Similar to GMJR's Perron for Hagelin trade. Both Gurianov and Kapanen need a change of scenery.

Additional Details:
Similar to GMJR's Scuderi for Daley trade
3.

  2. Heinen, Danton
  3. Légaré, Nathan
  4. 2023 2nd round pick (PIT)

Additional Details:
No comparison to 2016 but a upgrade at 3C and goalie are needed badly

I like the thought process, but I don't think it's much of a solution.
Gurianov and Kapanen have essentially been in the same situation for a couple seasons now. I'd rather pay out on a guy who's more proven than hoping a change of scenery works.
Our defense is absolutely an issue, every other team that gives up as many shots as we do is in the Bedard race. A 37 year old Alex Goligoski who's been Minnesota's 7th defenseman isn't going to solve that.
As far as defensive play goes, Max Domi isn't ideal either, but he is at least an upgrade offensively.
Stalock's been surprisingly good this season, but I'm also not sure if he's really going to make much of a difference.
On paper, at least, I don't think this team is much better than what we're doing right now.

Yeah it's far from guaranteeing a better team but I do think there is some potential that it might. There just isn't a whole lot of options for this team unfortunately and I just don't think this team as constructed now is even close to being a contender. The only way is if Crosby, Malkin, and Jarry play out of their minds.

We still have the majority of our slate of draft picks in the next couple years. It might not be a popular idea, but that gives quite a decent amount of value to throw around. When we resigned Geno and Tanger, it was a commitment to trying to keep the window open. The future's going to be tough after the Big 3 regardless. Why not just go all-in?
There are still options. McCabe on the top pairing with Letang would go a long way. Adam Henrique at 3C would go a long way.
There are good wingers we could inquire about: Bertuzzi, Barbashev, Bjugstad, Greenway, Jeannot, and JVR are all on TSN's current trade board. Maybe the Sharks would listen to offers for Barabanov or Labanc.
