If I was GM since Hextall took over

Created by: evanrodjesus
Team: 2022-23 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 10, 2023
Published: Mar. 10, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
- The most obvious decision of all time despite no one agreeing with me at the time; keeping McCann and protecting him over 36 year old Carter in the expansion draft and extend him for less than Hextall extended Carter and Kappy combined💀
- Revert this years TDL cause it was a huge success!
- Never extend Carter in the first place
- Revert the Matheson trade
- Re-sign E-Rod last offseason cause he wanted to stay but Hextall never offered cause we already had elite 3C Jeff Carter locked up for 2 more years on a full NMC cause he’s so elite!
- Re-sign Freddy Gaudreau back in 2021 cause he was very affordable and was the perfect 4C.
- Claim Sonny Milano from WSH off waivers back in October
- Claim Rudolfs Balcers off waivers from Florida back in November
- Trade for Jakub Vrana while his value was laughably low
- Never sign McGinn, Rutta and Archibald because they were never needed.
- and finally, the only move I make here that wasn’t officially available to Hextall at a certain time, but let’s not act like this minor deal couldn’t have possibly been made. Trade McGinn’s contract. Anaheim took a 3rd to take his $ and gave us Kulikov at half retained. CHI/ARZ probably take a 5th and McGinn for FC. Why trade for a dman whose older and worse than POJ just to play him over POJ? Hextall logic.

I know you can call this a “looking back I would’ve done this or that” situation, but I prayed for Hextall to make all of these moves at those times and didn’t like the moves he ended up making from the start. Believe what you will…

But in the words of Adam Herman, “You can say that analytics is only part of the equation, doesn’t measure everything, whatever. At the end of the day, like 90% of the worst moves could have been avoided by listening to a teenager with a subscription to Evolving Hockey”

Don’t forget Frederick Gaudreau, keeping Matheson + Marino and trading Dumo to make room for Reilly!

1 they would have taken Tanev still not Carter. 2 of all the GM can't "scratch Dumillon" that is the coaches decision, and scratching him would piss guys off too. Don't get me wrong I still would if I was Sully but don't expect him to still be a "glue guy"

Other than that I like it

Hextall offered ERod a 3x3. His agent told him to turn it down as there were going to be better offers. Those never came and the Pens spent that money elsewhere.
        Edit: I do believe

Yep I actually had Freddy on here but changed my mind to claim Balcers instead. Thats the only one you could say was a “looking back I would’ve done this” situation because at that time I 100% would’ve kept him. I might change that. And i thought abt reversing the Math and Marino trades but I honestly think Smith has a higher ceiling than Marino. I wouldn’t have traded Math at the time either i just decided not to reverse that. Maybe I will.

        1) that’s exactly my point. Why trade McCann so “we don’t lose him for nothing in the expansion draft”… just to lose Tanev for nothing anyway. We couldve just protected McCann over Carter and only lost Tanev for nothing. Now for Carter going to Seattle that’s supposed to represent him going to free agency cause i never would have extended him in the first place. 2) I see your point. I was trying to look at this from a realistic team perspective rather than just a pure business side. But if the team would still be upset then I would just trade him. At some point the players need to be held accountable and realize it’s a business. Its not worth keeping a $4M 3LD cause he’s a glue guy. Someone else fill that role.

Where did you hear that from? I recently heard from one of those ig accounts that post news/rumours (that cite trustworthy sources) that Hextall never offered him a contract. I also know E-Rod had interest in staying because that was rumoured at the time and he’s since confirmed it. Another thing i’ll add is that some guy tweeted about how Hextall needed to be held accountable for his bad decisions and E-Rod liked the tweet (likely indicating he was not happy with not being offered an extension to stay in PIT). I’m sure he would’ve stayed in PIT for the same price COL gave him.
