Offseason

Team: 2023-24 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 21, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Reserve List

Joni Jurmo - 3rd round pick from a couple years back. Id expect him to get a look in Abbotsford and join fellow countryman Raty.

Connor Lockhart - late round pick who has produced in juniors. Worth a contract, could have similar AHL transition to Bains who was also a high end WHL player.

RFA

Ethan Bear - Allvin hinted that Bear would probably not be getting much of a raise. I suspect this also means that the Canucks are not buying any of Bears UFA years, meaning its likely to be a 1 year deal.

Hoglander - Being sent down after basically 2 full years in the NHL has probably strained the relationship between the Canucks and Hoglander. I suspect this may make Hoglander reluctant to sign a long term deal. Moreover, I expect the total dollar amount to be lower as well given the fact that Hoglander has spent essentially 1.5 years in the AHL/ in and out of NHL lineup.

Create a Player

Kuzmenko Bonous - Kuzmenko his nearly $850,000 in performance bonuses that will count against the teams cap this season since they were in LTIR last season.

UFA

Magnus Hellberg - The Canucks have said they do not expect to spend a lot in net this next season. I suspect they give Martin an opportunity to reclaim the backup. Hellberg comes to Vancouver with an opportunity to work with Ian Clarke and fight with Martin for starts.

David Kampf - The Canucks have made clear that the teams biggest offseason priority is to address the 3rd line centre spot. They target a former teammate/linemate of Mikheyev to fill the role.

VAN
  1. Ouellet, Xavier
  2. Rutta, Jan
Additional Details:
Penguins get a Zucker replacement in their top 6 with Garland. Moreover, with reports that Penguins are looking more towards analytics with their next front office there may be interest in a player whose 5 on 5 profile remains strong despite limited opportunity in Vancouver. Garlands contract also aligns well with the Penguins core. Additionally, the Penguins get to move off a Rutta’s contract. Rutta has often been injured and has not entirely lived up to the deal. Penguins also get to move off of another contract with Ouellet thus freeing an additional contract slot while also getting a pick as well in the deal.
PIT
  1. Garland, Conor
  2. 2024 4th round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
The biggest advantage for the Canucks is that they save cap space to help address other needs on the roster. They get back Rutta, who despite not playing well thus far could be a useful piece for the Canucks given the state of their defensive group. The Canucks give up a pick as a part of the deal to balance out the value slightly as Pittsburgh is taking on an extra year of term.

I’d rather keep Garland than move him for minimal cap savings

Fair enough. I think the biggest reason for the trade is to get the cap savings in Garlands final year as he has an extra year of term compared to Rutta. Additionally, it allows the Canucks to move off of a positional surplus for a player who could slot into the roster better.
