You're not being even close to realistic here in terms of the cost. There is not a chance in hell that BM is stupid enough to pay that. 2 x former 1st rounders + 2 x 2nd round picks to not select Manson or Vatanen and take on Stoners contract? Pass. If that was the deal on the table, I have no doubt that BM just moves Vatanen for whatever he can get i.e. Connor Brown + pick from TOR, buys out Bieksa and says "have at it George McPhee!".
People are really struggling with this concept, particularly those who are desperate to see ANA get screwed over. We're not paying for LV to not pick Manson or Vatanen (this would still be a stupid overpayment). We're paying LV to make our lives easier. BM could easily have moved Vatanen for a small package and bought out Bieksa. Instead, he spoke to McPhee and said "look, I've had offers for Vatanen and I have the go ahead from the owners to buyout Bieksa if needs be. That would leave you with Wagner as your best pick. However, I'd really like to keep all my guys. What would be your price?". If the offer is unreasonable then BM just trades Vatanen and buys out Bieksa, if it's reasonable then he doesn't and gets to keep all his guys. Wagner + Peterson/Welinski + 2nd is better for LV than just selected Wagner. So it's in their interest to make a deal. The point is that McPhee doesn't hold all the cards. BM has quite a lot of leverage in this situation, unlike the NYI for example. Given that NYI has reportedly given up a 1st (possibly with a +) to keep their guys, why is it costing us 2 x 1st in Theodore + Jones and 2 x 2nds on top of that? Because they're taking on 3.25M, which is absolutely nothing to them, for 1 year? It doesn't make sense.
In summary, I suspect we paid a small price to keep all our guys. It gives BM flexibility in terms of what he wants to do moving forward and pushes the price up on Vatanen if he does decide to move him.
