Description
if I see one more awful trade for Lafreniere justified by "the rangers have no cap space and have to trade him" i will combust. the only point of this is to show the Rangers arent as cap strapped as people are making them out to be. they can comfortably bridge their RFAs as well as extend Motte/Halak at about what they made last year and fill in the rest of the roster with space space to spare. The depth would be brutal but they could absolutely avoid any major roster gymnastics by just buying out Goodrow. the rangers dont have to give away any of their young players to appease the cap. they could ice this roster, build cap space, and fill in the holes at the deadline. thanks for coming to my bored at work ted talk

Are you completely against resigning Tarasenko? If I was the Rangers and he actually wanted to play for us, I would make that a priority over holding on to all of my developing players. The package you could get for one of Kakko or Laf would be significant and Tarasenko will def outperform each of them for the next 2-3 years IMO.

Not against extending Tarasenko….just don’t want that to be the reason Kakko or LaF are moved.

If an overpay is offered for either then Drury has to consider- and as a result maybe a deal can be struck with Tara.

I would love for them to find a way to keep Vlad but not at the expense of those two. I don't agree that he will outperform the two of them for the next few years however. If you look at just even strength scoring (Laf and especially Kakko got no PP time) Tarasenko had 0.52 points per game vs Kakko (0.45) and Laf (0.43). It isn't a huge difference (not to mention Kakko's impact off the scoresheet.) If Kakko is given a top 6 role I'm positive his scoring would go up significantly. Laf I don't feel as sure saying that about but he's flashed ridiculous talent consistently so I'd rather give him a chance and fail with him than trade him to keep an aging vet and while Laf blossoms elsewhere.

I think it's incredibly shrewd asset management to trade one of them from a position of strength when you have an equivalent player waiting in the wings. That's a dynasty move.

Ok. Let's say the production from Kakko & Tara would be equal for 2 years. Trading Kakko for a King's ransom (no LA affiliation) is the kind of move I would want my GM to do. Develop your overall program to be so interesting it attracts UFAs... Develop prospects and keep some of them and trade others for more prospects.

I get what you're saying but I don't think it applies in this scenario at all. They don't have a plethora of winger depth, particularly as is they stand to have to move one of Laf/Panarin/Kreider to RW to fill a top 6 spot so its not exactly trading from a position of strength to restock assets. Not to mention Tarasenko is almost 32 and has a long injury history, he is far from a sure thing to continue to be as good as he was even this year. Smart teams don't trade away young ascending players to retain old past their prime vets. If Drury actually gets a offered a King's ransom of like a mid to high 1st rounder + cost controlled NHL player + a good prospect (which I highly doubt anyone would offer for either of Laf or Kakko currently) then its a different story but trading either of them for magic beans to keep Vlad is bad GM'ing. Also, respectfully, the Rangers could ice a team of mites and they'd still be a top destination for players to sign as UFAs or get traded to haha

No way Goodrow gets bought out, you saw what Drury packaged to get rid of Nemeth and he had no value. Goodrow will be traded for a return or don’t be surprised if Drury packages him with Grubbe or Jones to get some draft picks this year.

Sinking an asset just to trade him would be poor management in my opinion. Trading Goodrow creates 3.6 mil in space the next two seasons, buying him out creates 3.8 then 3.7 respectfully and wouldn't have an actual charge against the cap til 25-26. I agree Goodrow has value and will probably be traded for a pick outright but I was just trying to show that even if no one wants to take him from NYR, they can just buy him out with zero problems for the next 2 seasons.
