Soucy and Mayfield are both 3rd pair D, effective in limited roles with limited ice time against non-elite players. Schenn unlocked Rielly, playing the same role as you'd see players like Geoff Beukeboom play for Brian Leetch in the 90s. There's no reason to walk away from that and pay more for a replacement.
In the regular season, analytics had TJ Brodie as the 9th best defensive defenseman in the entire NHL. Trading him for a 3rd or 4th liner (depending on the day) because Brodie was likely hurt in the playoffs will not happen.
With all respect, the Winnipeg trade would be disastrous. At least we'd get Ehlers, still though.
