Detroit Red Wings

Created by: Lancebmx
Team: 2023-24 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: May 13, 2023
Published: May 17, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Free Agents:
Killorn - 27G, 37A, 64P. Plays with some edge. 2 Stanley Cups plus a ton of playoff experience which could be crucial for this team. 50.3% Corsi for with more defensive zone starts.
Acciari - 14G, 9A, 23P. Right handed centre with a very strong defensive game. High energy player with 244 hits last season. Also 53.8% on draws.
Schenn - 318 hits, 98 blocked shots. Played alot of top line minutes with Hughes and Reilly. Could provide great mentorship for Edvinsson, Johansson and Wallinder.
Stolarz - 3.73GAA, 0.897SvPt on a really bad Anaheim team that was a -129 goal differential. Posted really good numbers with Anaheim the year before, 0.917 in 28GP.

Draft:
#9 - Moore
#14 - Willander
#17 - Barlow
#41 - Augustine

Extensions:
Seider 8 x 9M
Raymond 3 x 5.5M
Rasmussen 6 x 3.5M
Berggren 3 x 3.5M
Foligno 1 x 1.8M
Johansson 2 x 0.975K

This team would ideally be alot tougher to play against and hopefully better defensively. The offense should come eventually as younger players like Raymond and Berggren develop. I think a full season of Berggren could see 20-25 goals.
I have Kasper starting the season in Detroit and on a line with the responsible Copp to help mentor and Berggren to try and build some chemistry.
Last season Detroit was 19th in the league in face-off percentage with a 49.1%. By bringing in Johansen, 8th overall at 59.2%, and Acciari, 44th overall at 53.8%, we should improve in that category which should lead to a few more goals forth and less against.
Detroit was also 19th in the league in hits with 1812. Just by bringing in Schenn, 1st overall with 318 his, Acciari, 10th overall with 244 hits, and Foligno, 14th overall with 237 hits, this team will be alot tougher to play against which should create more space and more opportunities for our goal scorers.
Edvinsson likely still out to start the season so I have Johansson up getting some games in until Simon returns. Unless he absolutely earns it, which I kind of expect he will, he will go back to Grand Rapids until there is more space for him.
I have Murray in the AHL so I can have another back up. He would get some games in the NHL if he plays well in there minors and stays healthy. He can be easily sent down and if someone wants to claim him they can have him.
Perron, Barrie and possibly Foligno traded at the deadline. Not opposed to keeping Perron but I think he could get a good return at the deadline and extending him would make it tough for Mazur, Soderblom or whoever else to get into the line up in 2024. I expect both Mazur and Soderblom to get some time in Detroit once injuries hit.
I wouldn't expect this team to make the playoffs but I would expect them to be tougher to play against and be better than 24th in the league for goal against. Ideally finish with a positive goal total. Also would like to see some young players take some strides forward like Raymond.

Trades
1.
DET
  1. Foligno, Marcus
  2. Goligoski, Alex
  3. 2023 2nd round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
Goligoski waives.
Detroit gets a high end defensive player in Foligno who plays with alot of grit and passion. Also provides some good leadership. A few qualities we seemed to be missing last season.
Goligoski wouldn't be the first choice for a 7th D but he is serviceable and cheap enough. Has spent enough time playing both sides in his career.
MIN
  1. Kubalik, Dominik
Additional Details:
Minnesota gets a 20G, 45P guy who could produce more with better line mates. They also get 2.6M in cap space. They give up the later second which is from Vegas.
2.
DET
  1. Murray, Matt
  2. 2023 1st round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
#28 Overall
TOR
  1. 2023 2nd round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
#62 Overall
3.
DET
  1. 2023 1st round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
#14 Overall

Unlikely to happen but I think the value is close.

Penguins unlikely to want to move down but I feel they would be the most logical team for trade down scenario to gain extra picks this year.
PIT
  1. 2023 1st round pick (BOS)
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (STL)
  3. 2023 2nd round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
#28 Overall
#42 Overall
#43 Overall

Detroit also likely just makes the picks as I'm sure they can find some gems in the early second round but they have moved up in the past.
4.
DET
  1. Barrie, Tyson
  2. Johansen, Ryan
Additional Details:
Likely unpopular trade but Detroit gets a powerplay quarterback who, if paired with someone like Maatta, could be very solid for us.
We also get Johansen, who's 28 points in 55 games doesn't seem worth while, but his 59.2% in the faceoff circle definitely helps. He is also responsible in his own zone, plays with an edge and is a good leader.
NSH
  1. Fabbri, Robby
  2. Zadina, Filip
Additional Details:
For Nashville they get Fabbri, who when healthy is an effective player but the problem is staying healthy.
Zadina was hurt for most of the season last season but still hasn't really figured it out. Maybe given a different opportunity on a different team he could develop into a solid middle sixer.
Nashville saves 6.675M in cap space with this deal.

Minnesota doesn't consider this deal. Your overvaluing a position Minnesota doesn't need and player whose not needed and average. Only Detroit signed him. Foligno isn't a cap dump, nor 2nd round pick or Alex. Dean Evason doesn't like players like Dominik, neither does bill
Wolverrobert liked this.

I don't think that Minnesota trade will go through.

Schenn is fine, but you don't sit $6.75M in cap hits, in Chiarot and Goligoski, that can play the right side when needed, in the press box to sign him.

I like Stolarz, but would want to sign a really good AHL starter.

I would be fine with the Nashville trade since the terms are short. I do worry that it might put us in bad shape next offseason with Johansen's big salary and Seider, Raymond, Rasumussen, etc. to pay. It limits our ability to sign replacements for Foligno, Perron, and Barrie. Would need some of Soderblom, Veleno, Mazur, 2023 first rounds picks to stick and contribute by then.

Yeah Minnesota trade is a stretch but I like it personally. Goligoski I think now is a 6/7D. Chiarot wouldn't sit every game but I'm not a fan of him that much. He would also be 6/7D but would get some games in as well when needed and for injuries. I do believe at the start of the season we had Suter and Kubalik as healthy scratches, I may not remember correctly but really it's at the coaches discretion. Schenn provides alot more stability and can play any pairing and all situations.
Stolarz would be fine I think. Murray is in the AHL and Cossa to back him up, if he is deemed ready. He started off rough at the start of the season in the ECHL but seemed to play better near the end. Not opposed to a different goalie joining in, just figure they will be lost to waivers if they get called up and such.
I put the extensions in the description and we would still have alot of cap to retain Foligno, Perron and Barrie if needed. I would like to keep Foligno but trade Barrie and Perron. I really like Perron but he could fetch a nice return and open up a spot for Berggren to move up and allow Mazur or Soderblom to get a roster spot. Could also be one of our picks this year as well.
