Description
Trying out a bit of a different perspective here. Since I have over-exhausted a number of Forbort and Dumba ACGMs, I thought I would take a look at the potential future of the Ducks roster with no trades or signings just to see how this team fills out before any big moves. Wanted to give all the big prospects their big boy contracts to see if the patience game is worth it (I think its a resounding yes). Thought it was helpful in seeing what type of moves GMPVB could make in the next couple of years while taking into account expected player contracts after their ELCs expire, so as to not send us into cap hell.

Its way too early to predict most of these guys cap hits, and I am sure I botched a few of them (let me know where you disagree cause I guessed on a lot of them), but I gave it a shot. I'm not too knowledgeable on the defensive market to be honest, so the defense is probably especially far off. Of course we have no idea how some of these guys will fare once given NHL minutes, but this roster was made with hopeful, yet realistic expectations from these guys. Not every one of these guys is likely to be on the roster or even pan out, but with the depth of the prospect pool we will be fine once you factor in free agency as anyone of these guys who doesnt pan out can be effectively replaced in the FA market.

Strome, Fowler and Gibson are the only aging contracts we have for 3+ years. Other than that, any of the younger guys will net a fair return in any potential trade should they not work out on the Ducks. Below I have the ages of everyone going into the 26-27 season (a few offseason birthdays might be off by a year) and its interesting to see how young that defensive core is compared to the forwards. I likely see us trading a few of those guys down the road, maybe for a more veteran presence on the backend if enough of them show promise. But the forwards all being in their prime at the same time is so fun to think about. The only hole in the roster is that 2RW spot, so maybe that is a position to start thinking about as Strome bumps down to third line. (also Terry is only 4 years younger than Strome? weird)

2026-27 Ducks by age

Zegras (25) - Fantilli (21) - Terry (28)
Comtois? (24) - McT (23) - ???
Regenda? (26) - Lundy (26) - Strome (32)
Jones (28) - Gaucher (22) - Groulx (26)

Minty (22) - Drysdale (24)
Zelly (22) - Helleson (25)
Lacombe (25) - Warren (21)
Hinds (23) - Luneau (22)

Gibson (32)
Dostal (25)

*Disclaimer, not all of these guys will have their big boy contracts by the 26-27 season

Projected Cap: $94 Mill
My first way-too-early proposal for this roster: Trade 2 D-men and Comtois (using Hinds and Luneau in this calculation) for futures to keep the prospects on ELCs coming. Brings cap hit down to 84.5 (9.6 in cap space) with need to sign a middle/top six forward, depth forward on ELC and 2 Depth D

Dumba contract at 4-5 years would be just what the right side needs to get through until more of the RHD are NHL age (just saying)

This is really a great effort. I might have additional opinions when I re-read it again, but two things jump out at me: the omission of Jacob Perreault, in whom I still have high hopes, and the hilarious spelling of Fantillio's first name.

Thanks man and I definitely could have included a Perrault/Tracey/Pastujov to fill it out, but I just think they are less certain to make the NHL jump in a meaningful way. Having one of those guys on a cheap deal would be exactly what is needed to fill out the roster. Also should mention that Regenda could be replaced with Nester. Either way, this got me excited for this team again because the end of this past season was absolutely brutal to get through

Any thoughts on Tracey and Perrault? Their time could be up, but I want to hold hope on them.

My thoughts personally are kind of boring, but its "lets see what they do this year" as I think this is a big prove it year for both. After a seemingly bad year all around for the forward group in SD, I want to see if they can rebound under McIlvane. New systems, new coach... I am definitely not ready to give up on them yet. They can absolutely still prove to be serviceable middle six guys (maybe Tracey is less likely), and if they have good years out of the gate this year, then we should see what they have to show in the NHL. If its another lackluster year, my doubts will certainly be escalated. I am higher on Perrault than Tracey, especially given the above roster, I think his game fits better with the core that we already have as once Frank is gone, we will need a true sniper and I'm not sure if Tracey's game will translate well. I could have included them, but I tried to only include sure bet guys... although I did put Comtois and Regenda on there so I guess that is out the window.
