First Armchair GM my hope for Griers summer

Created by: Brian_O_Blivion
Team: 2023-24 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 2, 2023
Published: Jun. 2, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
No big signings. Another high pick in 2024. Take Mantha to add some needed size in the top 6 (Eklund protection).

4 OA select Michkov. Fits our timeline perfectly. Potential generational talent, no brainer.
26 OA select Kasper Halttunen. Power forward with size and scoring ability can replace some of what we lost with Timo.
36 OA select Maxim Strbak. RHD with NHL size, physical, needs to work on composure with the puck and producing more offense. I really like this guy.

Do you think they try to move Karlsson in the off-season or no?

I think it’s unlikely. Grier is selling super high and doesn’t want to eat too much retention. Karlsson was a different guy last year not just production but he was a better leader, a bit improved defensively and overall a better voice in the room. Without him our offense basically plummets.

If he wants to tank hard then yes he will trade him. Grier was on record saying that he isn’t itching to move a 100 point defenseman, he’s under contract with San Jose. It has to be an offer that works for San Jose, not just getting worked over because they don’t have to move him. Rumor was he only wanted to retain something like 18% of karlssons deal and 3 1st round picks worth in return but that was unconfirmed. I would imagine he tops out at 30% retention, similar to burns last offseason, but only if he gets what he wants in return.

Grier laughed at the 3 1st’s rumor. But yeah I see the 30% being max. Karlsson is younger, better than Burns so the return has to be excellent.

Karlsson to Buffalo. $2M retained for 14OA. Done at the draft. (Note this is the bones of the deal. More to come to SJS likely)

Karlsson provides leadership to a young team and D core. They have the cap space. They’re a player away from playoff window opening.

He younger, better, and hasn’t asked to leave unlike burns. Some people seem to think the sharks will get nothing for him. I don’t think their word is gospel by any means but Locked on sharks thought Karlsson would bring a burns like return which I thought was absurd.

I saw a Buffalo podcast post Karlsson 50% retained (let’s meet in the middle and say 3 mil) for Olofsson Ostlund and the 23 1st. Both the player we get at 13 plus Ostlund would be a nice return considering we essentially gave up Norris and Stuzie plus a few good picks and players to get him a few years ago.

50% retention would cost a heap more than that. Thats a crippling sum for any franchise to eat and frankly, is unprecedented and not realistic at all

Depending on how much is retained we should get somewhere between what we paid for Karlsson and what we got for Burns. 50% retained should return 75/80% of what we paid and if we only retain 30% we should get about 1/2 what we paid for Karlsson. Zero retention would only garner about what Burns returned.

Locked on Sharks is not a viable source at all. JD is a fan not a source with connections to the brass.

Except with the sharks in rebuild mode with the intention of building a youth movement the cap hit on retention really doesn’t hurt us and would still be less than Min is dealing with on the 2 albatross buy outs the next few years.

Not really. His only “connection” is Sheng and he manufactures storylines as clickbait on his site out of literally nothing. Masisak and Pashelka are the only insiders worth following. The only local ones anyway.
