Ideal Off-Season

Created by: GladeBang12
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 5, 2023
Published: Jun. 5, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Domi, although awful defensively, improves this team A LOT in terms of what we need.

The Murray situation could go so many ways:
- Most Leafs fans don’t (and for good reason) want to give up assets to get rid of his contract. I personally think it won’t cost as much as other fans think, but that’s just my opinion.
- Most want to buyout, mainly bc the cost to dump him is too high on CF. It maximizes our cap situation this season. Although 2 million next season doesn’t seem like much, it will when Matthews, Nylander, and Lilly’s new contracts kick in. Not to mention next years FA class is significantly better than this years.
- We could trade him with retention.
- I also think that if there’s a market for Samsonov, I wouldn’t mind trading him and rolling the dice on Murray again. There’s still a high reward there if all things go right for him.

If there's still that much cap left over I'd rather just bury Murray in the AHL and not worry about the buyout penalty next year

Agreed. Just left that cap open to show other moves could be made.

You could make the argument for getting Domi or not- he does give a lot of what the Leafs need- but no one can make that argument for him at 2C. Zero chance that can happen. Pack it up now.

It might be a little risky/experimental but it’s better than going into next season with JT as 2C. The other options are very limited. Domi has a lot of upside and really hasn’t ever been given a sustained opportunity to play between two elite players. He had a really good year in 18-19 before the habs started playing him on the wing (where he doesn’t thrive).

It is not better than going into next season with JT at 2C. It's not ideal for JT to be a C, but if your choice is JT at C or Max Domi, it's not even a question. Even with his slow speed and subpar defense, he would be miles better at C.

I don't know how long people are going to keep citing that Domi outlier year at C. We know that's not him, and there is a reason he doesn't play C.

He does play centre though. He had a lot of success in the playoffs this year playing that position. He’s been on bad teams most of his career. That one outlier season is cited because it was the last time he had an opportunity to play to his strengths. I don’t see any reason why he can’t replicate that type of production, and even more, playing between Marner and Tavares.
