Leafs - 2 trades to set things right

Created by: HollywoodHudon
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 13, 2023
Published: Jun. 13, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This current off-season or before the end of this upcoming season:
Matthews gets his new contract - long term (at least 5 years) worth $15m per season.
Lafferty gets extended to a 3 or 4 year deal worth about $2m per season.

In 2 years time:
Tavares, Kane, O'Rielly. Rodrigues, Acciari and Kampf will all be done their contracts.
Marner gets named captain and gets a new long term deal (at least 5 years) worth $15m per season.
Knies will move to the top line to play with Matthews and Marner.
Voit/Minten/Zohorna will create the 2nd line after getting to know each other this year and then dominating the AHL the following year.
This will create a ton of cap space while (if all player development goes as it should) maintaining a very solid offensive and hard to play against top 6.
Holmberg should be able to slot into Kampf's 4C spot seemlesly and cheaply.
Jarnkrok will be in the final year of his contract.
3rd line can be comprised via UFA signings.
Woll should be the starting goalie by then and one of the 4 AHL goalies should be ready for backup duties (I am thinking it will likely be Khalgren).

The only "Need" up front is the 2C spot for next year - extending Scheifele for 1 year at $5m should be doable. If not... trade at the deadline for a 2C with 1 extra year remaining or look to next year's UFA market to fill the void.
"Needs" on the back end will be an extension or a replacement for DeMello for around the $3m/ season price tag and a Liljegren extension for around $2.5m-$3m depending on his development. Hopefully after this year he will be able to move up and replace Schenn on the 2nd pairing and play with Rielly.

No picks given up. Brodie is worth more than a late 2nd as a rental. The retention on Murray also makes his deal as a veteran rental G more palatable.

Winnipeg is not trading for Nylander unless an extension is in place. They have already said they want younger NHL ready players with term. they want guys they can keep not let walk after 1 year.
Scheifele is not going to take a pay cut for 1 year, he's 30 .. this will be his last chance to sign one more BIG contact. why would he take a pay cut?

if the leafs give Matthew and Marner $15,000,000 you know that means you have $30,000,000 tied up into 2 players. how do you build team success when you have 2 guys who take up more than 1/3 of your cap space?
if thats what Matthews wants then trade him now, get as much as you can in a return. teams don't have success tying up that much cap space in 2 players.

once Toews and Kane 10,500,000 contacts kicked in how successful were they? .. let me tell you, lost in the 1st round twice, missed the playoffs twice then lost in the 1st round again then missed the playoffs 3 years in a row.

Nylander sign and trade is possible, similar to how Severson went to CBJ.

As for the Toews and Kane deals... That was the cost of winning all those cups when the 2 of them were affordable! The price may be hefty, BUT certainly a price Leafs fans would HAPPILY pay!

Nylander has a M-NTC .. with everyone wanting out of Winnipeg why would he accept a sign and trade there?

yes, that is the cost of winning the cups, but once those deals kicked in it crumbled the team .. but they won thats the difference between them and the leafs 2. you need to understand, they WON 3 cups BEFORE they got 10,500,000 each. with their lower cap hits out of their ELC they were able to surround them with a better supporting cast.

what did Matthews and Marner do to deserve such high salaries after their ELC? they haven't won anything.
so how is giving them MORE going to be beneficial?
