Cap compliant no moves required

Created by: MarcShow
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 25, 2023
Published: Jul. 29, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This team can be cap compliant at 20 players. Not ideal but dress 11 F and 7 D.

Clifford, McMann, Gambrell, Lajoie and Lagesson require waivers. Unlikely to lose any of them and even if they do not a big loss.

Could send Knies down instead of one of the waiver exposed forwards but can't see Knies not make it over those players.

Again, far from ideal...

I could see a scenario where Brodie does get shipped to a team like EDM and the Leafs go sign Dumba at a lower cost to make a 22 man roster work... Also, Minten coming in soon 👀

20 player roster. Are you going to turn off injuries and suspensions?

Lol nice! I’m just showing they can be cap compliant by season start. Agreed that it’s not sustainable.

Especially if someone gets injured but only goes on IR cuz then you have to play a man short

I know😊 New Jersey did this to start the season back when they signed Kovalchuk. Didn't make the playoffs, but made the finals the following year, if I recall right.

Teams have done this already, yeah there is risk and likely it will cause a head ache or two but at some point someone will miss 10 games and you get extra space. Like what happened last season. It not ideal at all but absolutely a tactic many teams have used. This isn't new, lots of teams are forced to do this at the end of the season because they can't afford to keep any spares to be able to get additions as the deadline. TO did run into this situation at the end of the season when they brought in all those practice goalies or whatever happened there. Luckily it worked out but the point is, it's literally been done. This isn't new, why are guys ignoring this and so desperately holding onto this idea that "TO has to trade someone and pay to do it" because sometime someone may get hurt and then we may have to play a game with a short bench, until we get an emergency call up the next game.

We get it, you want the leafs to implode, I don't get why you have to shout it all the time.

They did the same thing last year and unfortunately very quickly Murray got hurt for over 10 games and went on LTIR making it a moot point. But it did make the goaltending situation fun at the end of the season when Samsonov was rested and that didn't allow them to call anyone up, so they had all those College kids come and back up Woll. It's risky but it's not half as dire as most make it out to be. Pretty sure when a player is hurt and is forced to leave a game or can't play in today's game, you can't use an emergency call up until the next day. So that's where you get burned. Guy gets hurt in practice on Wednesday, Thursday is the game and you have to play a man short and then get the emergency call up the next game. Those don't affect your cap and I think those guys can only stay up for a finite amount of time but it would almost certainly become an LTIR situation before that time frame happened. But not always.
