Hughes, no contest. They had very similar production metrics at 5v5 this year but Hughes is significantly younger and should be unequivocally the better player going forward.

Is 22 vs 25 actually “significant” though?
It’s not like it’s 28 vs 31
BOTH are still young

Just in terms of room to grow. Year over year improvement for forwards slows dramatically after 24, and the overwhelming majority have hit their peak by 26. I know Tage is the definition of statistical outlier, but statistically speaking you'd expect Hughes to have take another large step forward in the next two years, whereas Thompson having a significant increase in production would be insane.
I’m a Sabres fan, but it’s a coin flip for me
I wouldn’t be mad about having either
But (obviously), watching Tage develop over the last couple years has me a bit biased

I think once u get to the level Tage & Hughes are at, that it’s really hard to take another leap forward from that
Can Hughes (or Thompson) get to a level like Draisaitl, for example?
Maybe imo, but not likely either
But if one was more likely than the other to take another leap forward- then sure, it’s fair to say Hughes us the better chance to do that (even if that chance is small)
