Let's see if we can really put this idea to bed cause it's just getting tiresome.
Jarnkrok is 32 getting paid 2.1 million until he is 34.
The Flames, whose ownership notoriously doesn't retain on deals are eating 2.25M for a player they really like on the roster that they have engaged in extension talks.
The Leafs 1st round picks in the last 3 years have been 28, 25, 25, with the expectation that they should be lower than that this year.
The Flames are not tanking this year, they are looking to compete, whether that is right or wrong Chris Tanev helps that, and Tanev helps a D core that's struggling in their own zone while switching systems.
If the Flames were tanking, there is not a world where Tanev is moved for anything other than future assets that build their prospect pool, not Calle Jarnkrok
Jarnkrok has a M-NTC, a lot of players have most of Canada on those lists, and there is a good chance he doesn't want to return to the place he had the worst half year of his career.
If Tanev was on the market at 50% retained 30 teams would put together a better offer than this one.
Jarnkrok doesn't fill a need for the Flames at any position really, he's exactly what they already have too much of, middling bottom 6 forwards that can slot up and down.
My best guess is that Tanev will finish the season in Calgary and then move on through free agency, there is nothing wrong with letting your 2nd pair D man fulfill his contract and move on.
