Realistic Nikita Zadorov Acquisition

Created by: bg77
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 11, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Here is what I think the Leafs should do with acquiring Nikita Zadorov. I think this is a fair trade for both parties, and also the Leafs should otherwise not part ways with more than what I have given.

- Toronto acquires Zadorov from Calgary for Conor Timmins and a 2024 3rd Rd Pick

Toronto needs to make sure there is salary retention given the cap crunch and the LTIR struggle which means Toronto does not accumulate cap space as the season progresses. I have Calgary retaining 50% of his deal. Leafs will also need to send down Ryan Reaves, as well as McMann, Benoit, and Lagesson, and run 11 and 7, which I feel comfortable with personally. It will help shelter John Klingberg who has struggled early on, and also restrict Mark Giordano's minutes as the season progresses. We all saw last year that Giordano started to run out of gas by the playoffs, but he is still a valuable commodity in the Leafs lineup on and off the ice. Additionally, injuries will always be inevitable, so if/when a player becomes hurt, they can be placed on LTIR if it is significant enough to keep them out for a while and Toronto can then adjust there lineup, potentially back to 12 forwards and 6 defenseman. It is evident that Brandon Pridham and co. are very creative with their cap management processes and this is one of the many areas that I have full confidence in the Leafs' front office staff with.

Calgary receives Conor Timmins, who is 25 years old and still has a year left after this season at $1,100,000, which is a great cap hit. Timmins has injury history, but has proven in his short time here that he has some impressive upside as a reliable two-way contributor. His contract also expires with him being a restricted free agent, meaning Calgary has full team control over his next contract. This allows Calgary to add a defenseman entering his prime, which fits in with their potential "re-tool", especially considering that they may lose all three of their big unrestricted defensemen anyways (Hanifin, Tanev, Zadorov). There is potentially a major hole in their lineup next season on the blueline, and Timmins helps out with this in the short-term future, as well as potentially in the years in succession. I also have Toronto throwing in a 3rd round pick to sweeten the pot, especially given the risks of Timmins' injury history. This trade only takes place once Timmins has returned from the LTIR this month and has played a number of games, he certainly needs to get reps in this season before we trade him anywhere.

Feel free to let me know what you think in the comment section below. I am open to all suggestions, both positive and constructive!

If you're asking CGY to retain, it'd be more like a 2nd. I also just don't overvalue Timmins like most leaf fans do

I think we should keep Timmins and move lily could probably get a sweet return for him

How about 2 3rds? Bc the Leafs don't have a 2nd

Do you have any reservations about trading for Zadorov specifically? I understand both schools of thought but I am leaning towards him being worth the trade that I proposed. Just curious to here your perspective.

Not really I’d prefer tanev but zadorov would be a good piece to add too

I based this trade value off of the recent trade that Craig Conroy made when he took over in the summer. He gave New Jersey Tyler Toffoli for Yegor Sharangovich and a 3rd. Toffoli had a full year left on his contract and had also just led the Flames in scoring. I think the 3rd is fine and if I were to give up more I would throw a lower round pick in addition as we have plenty of picks from the 5th round and onwards.

Not sure I agree with this. Liljegren has a much better track record for staying healthy, ironically as I say this he also injured like Timmins. Liljegren skates well and has a higher ceiling than Timmins IMO.

I don't know if I would even go that far, maybe throw in one of the lower round picks that we have this year in addition to the package I am sending over in this proposal. We have plenty of draft capital from the 5th round and beyond this year.

I like Tanev but I worry about injuries. I also would rather extend Zadorov given his age.

If it's an extra 3rd... Whatever... Z will be another impact and depth guy for only 2 3rds seems worth it to me

I don't disagree, I just look at the amount of picks the Leafs have in the next few years. If we give up next year's third as well, we only have 4 picks and all of them are from 5th round and later. I guess what I'm saying is that I don't know if it is the best idea when considering trade deadline deals next season when we still will be in win-now mode.

I'm still on the trade Willy train bc of how many assets we could get from him... and we won't have to shed cap and can get younger... If we them also move Klingberg, that's 11 mill to (hopefully) get a good top 6 piece and 2 good defensemen (using our current assets) with some draft capital

There is no way we are trading Nylander at this point though we are trying to win the Cup, it would be a bad look if we flip him for picks right now and don't replace him ASAP with another prolific player. Klingberg's value is low too right now, I doubt most teams would give anything in a trade.

I would rather give him what he wants personally. Too good to get rid of IMO
