My Leafs Post-Trade Deadline Lineup
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MitchJr</b></div><div>Looks reasonable but flip Brodie & Edmunsen imo. Brodie + McCabe last year was NFG in playoffs</div></div>
They were not good vs Florida last year I agree. I just like the idea of trying it out again so that each pairing has a physical presence. I wonder if having Brodie on his strong side this year will make the pairing better, last year Brodie was playing on the right side with McCabe.
McCabe, Lyubushkin, and Edmundson all in separate pairs I think will help the Leafs clear the front of the net more consistently.

Hello palhal,
Thank you for the feedback! I left the $980,333 cap space for a 7th D, and I would have the Leafs run 11 and 7 when Reaves doesn't play. Also, as injuries occur, cap space would become open for Leafs to bring up more guys from the Marlies.
I don't think Brodie or Tanev go any lower than $4,000,000. I do agree with you about Vladar, but I couldn't decide who I would run instead. What I like about Vladar is that he only has the one year on his deal remaining, who would you choose instead at a cheaper contract?
My thinking is like similar to what we did with Martin Jones, we get a third string goaltender with NHL history and give him that waiver day bonus that Treliving gave Jones, send him to the minors to play in tandem with Hildeby, and if Vladar falters we would have this other goalie as well. But again, I couldn't think of any names but would appreciate you helping me out with what you would have in mind.

Maple Leafs Cap Compliant Trade Deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ryminister_92</b></div><div>Trading a 1st for an injury riddled 34 year old pending UFA isn’t a smart idea. Yes the Leafs have heavy interest in Tanev, but I don’t think it’s for the 24’ 1st round pick level - they might rather take their chances and see if he hits free agency and sign him for nothing instead. Management realizes the team isn’t at a level of where it needs to be right now and part of that is the depth within the organization, Treliving is stressing to build up the prospects for that pick is more valuable to him than people think.
I think the only way the 24’ 1st round pick gets moved is for a defenceman with term - my guess is Ristolainen who Toronto has also had heavy interest in and has 4 years on his deal at a good cap hit.</div></div>
Thank you for the feedback! I think the fact that Tanev is from Toronto and familiar with Treliving makes this a great fit. I'm more bullish on him than you seem to be, and that's fine. In terms of Ristolainen, I don't know how Toronto could make the salary cap work, a big part of acquiring a player on an expiring deal is it is much more realistic to get salary retention, and then the Leafs could extend Tanev beyond this season on a 2 year bridge deal.
I do agree however that it would be enticing to keep the first and sign Tanev in July, I just think the Leafs need to keep going for it. Do you have any concerns heading into the playoffs with the roster?

Thank you for the feedback! I saw the LeBrun quote that I mentioned but was unaware of this additional bit of information. Very interesting idea, if the Leafs get a Calgary third it will be higher in the round too, that would be amazing.

Fleury was quoted during training camp that he wants to make a decision on his future at the end of the season. Toronto would give him the most play time as he would share the net with Joseph Woll, while also being on a competitive team. Minnesota will still be paying a combined $14,700,000 towards the Parise and Suter buyouts with Jesper Wallstedt ready to take his spot on entry-level money, Toronto will beat their offer given the cap crunch should he decide to continue playing.
If it's not Fleury, I believe Toronto will sign another goaltender at backup money similar to what I have given Fleury.

There is no way we are trading Nylander at this point though we are trying to win the Cup, it would be a bad look if we flip him for picks right now and don't replace him ASAP with another prolific player. Klingberg's value is low too right now, I doubt most teams would give anything in a trade.

I don't disagree, I just look at the amount of picks the Leafs have in the next few years. If we give up next year's third as well, we only have 4 picks and all of them are from 5th round and later. I guess what I'm saying is that I don't know if it is the best idea when considering trade deadline deals next season when we still will be in win-now mode.

I based this trade value off of the recent trade that Craig Conroy made when he took over in the summer. He gave New Jersey Tyler Toffoli for Yegor Sharangovich and a 3rd. Toffoli had a full year left on his contract and had also just led the Flames in scoring. I think the 3rd is fine and if I were to give up more I would throw a lower round pick in addition as we have plenty of picks from the 5th round and onwards.

We don't want to sign Samsonov to term if he wants more than $3,500,000 - $4,000,000 unless he stands on his head the rest of the year and playoffs. It's still super early, but I've been following Joseph Woll with the Marlies up until this point and I've been impressed enough with him to look elsewhere for a goalie partner with him. Joseph Woll will have a $766,667 cap hit next season, which is lower than the current league minimum at $775,000. It's more a cost thing than actually having poor goaltending, Samsonov had good numbers last season.

What would the asking price be for Vladar then? I'm not sure about other teams interested in trading for him but I don't think he has as much value as some Flames fans seem to think he would. At this point, he will have one year left, obviously he could have an amazing year this season and I understand that, but to this point he hasn't been consistent enough to me to warrant a huge return. Adin Hill was acquired by Vegas last summer for a 4th round pick with a similar games played total and numbers.
From my outside perspective, it seems the Flames might be more concerned with revamping their roster next year with more free agents if any of your pending UFAs walk, and dumping his $2.2 AAV could be more valuable than it seems. It also will finally give Dustin Wolf the opportunity to make the team, and teams will know that Vladar is the only goalie that is really available for trade given Markstrom's NMC. I'm interested to here what your opinion on this is.

Hello Birdman,
Thank you for the feedback. I think Minten's praise has been well deserved, I would take him over Holmberg and Robertson, but you can definitely make the argument for Gregor over him right now. I personally don't care either way if Minten makes it or not, going to junior will still be great for his development. I've liked him though and I think he adds a unique element to the bottom-six should Keefe decide he wants to keep him around. Losing Gregor on waivers isn't a good thing but it also wouldn't be the end of the world. I'd rather keep Lafferty personally.

Hey TMLBrian,
Thank you for the feedback. I really am hoping they do not waive Sam Lafferty. We have seen him play well enough in the playoffs last season, Gregor has been great too but we know more about Lafferty than him in competitive matches. If they sign Gregor I think they either send Minten to Kamloops or waive Gregor, hope he clears and then recall him when injuries happen.

Thank you for the positive feedback, I really appreciate it!
If Colorado wants a second, I'm going to assume Toronto waits until July 1st and rolls the dice that he will accept our contract offer at 7 years rather than 8. I'm not personally willing to give more up for him since he still isn't obliged to actually extend a contract with us once we acquire him. But I can understand your point of view, Toews is a great player. Sakic did a great job in his time as General Manager of your team, class act.

Hello ISUAvsFans45,
My point is that tying yourselves with the deal I have given Toews would handcuff your team greatly. Makar likely gets $13-$14 million at that point, Rantanen gets $11.5-$12 million, Byram could get $7-8 if he is healthy. The team needs to be able to supplement the rest of the roster, and if Colorado re-signs Toews, it becomes very difficult to keep the band together without having an enormously top heavy roster. I am a Leafs fan and have experienced this myself.
As I mentioned in a previous message to another commenter, I think Colorado would be wise to use that money upfront to bring in more middle-six forwards. Nathan Mackinnon is fantastic, but when he gets hurt, there is really nothing behind him at centre.

Hello Avsfantrumpetman,
Thank you for the feedback!
In my opinion, I honestly think it would be wise for Colorado to consider alternatives to signing Toews. You guys need to make sure there is enough money to keep Rantanen, Makar, and Byram once they expire. I also believe that an area of weakness when I look at Colorado is depth forwards, primarily up the middle. A lot of what your team does is going to depend on how Ryan Johansen fares in his first full season with the team. I would personally be inclined to use the money you would be giving Toews to add second line players and rebuild the depth upfront that was lost when guys like Kadri and Burakovsky left Colorado after your cup win. If Byram stays healthy, I would be content to run with Makar, Byram, Girard, and Manson as my top-four D core. Just my own thoughts and would like to here where you are at with this.

Hello MeetYourMakar,
Thank you for the feedback!
The Leafs actually would be able to give him 8 years in this instance, that is the whole point of us trading for him before the July 1st window. For reference, you can look at the Damon Severson trade that Columbus made with New Jersey in June. They acquired his rights to allow them to offer the 8 year deal. This was also something Toronto almost did with Edmonton when Zach Hyman was about to hit free agency. I believe Holland was willing to give us a fifth round pick to acquire Hyman and extend him for 8 years. Dubas wanted more so they just waited until the July 1st window and gave him 7 years instead.
