i can see patrick kane being the type of guy that would make sure he gets 88 before signing

Not a Wings fans, but Sprong probably gives up 88, since most times the younger player gives up the number for the older one. Happened when CBJ signed Gaudreau and SEA selected Giordano. Both were the older one who wanted that number and got it

Sprong has likely already called Kane and told him he'll give up 88 for him. That's kinda how respect for greatness works.
