Team: 2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 23, 2023
Published: Dec. 23, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
As of now...
-Bertuzzi will get more than Leafs are willing to pay and I would pencil Cowan into his mid 6 spot (also see trade idea)
-Domi also I would think will fetch more than what Leafs would pay
-Nylander has to get as much as Tavares and Marner's old deals or he splits
-I would ask Marner to waive his NMC and see what you can get, and the very least you gets picks and cap space but prolly also a mid 6 winger as well OR a goalie
-Reaves can be waived and if not picked up he goes to Marlies or plays a Simmonds type roll

THINGS WILL GET FINE TUNED THROUGH CAMP BUT
-D is WAYYY better imo
-G is not great but there is cap space and picks to acquire an improvement
-F is more balanced but could use another top 6, again there is cap space and picks to get it
-4 lines are rolled here with Matthews and Nylander getting extra ice time...the rest are all 12-15 minutes

I’d rather have Marner at whatever his extension would likely be than Nylander at $11M.

Edit: Cowan is also not making the roster next year and Minten will likely be AHL bound for more development.
Domi wants to stay, chances are he’d take a longer term deal at a cheaper AAV to stay in Toronto.
The defence is too injury prone and doesn’t move the puck that well outside of Rielly and maybe Walker.
Wedgwood would be a nice add but they’ll likely want someone with more starting experience because Woll is way too fragile to be a legit starting goalie

That top 6 is atrocious. You’ve made them a 1 line team and they’d be shut down pretty easily offensively and have to heavily rely on defence and goaltending to win and it’s not strong enough for that.

Appreciate all the comments and feedback! I do mention this is a WIP, especially at G.

Tbh re Nylander, I hope he goes to Vegas as I think he can find another level there, to me his ceiling is way higher than Marner.

And where as there is 1 elite line here as you say at least there are 4 good lines vs now…like tonight the bottom 6 is a total joke imo.

Thanks again though, I love that you took some time to provide your perspective.

Hey one more thing if I may…curious on what you think about rolling with what they got now vs a bunch of trades between now and TDL?

I’ll get into what I can, but I can’t say much on this.

I do know personally some people that work for the Leafs and a couple players.. highest person I know is Reid Mitchell and he’s the director of hockey operations so I know a bit about what’s they’ve talked about in the trade front.
That being said, I’d be shocked if there’s a lot of trades between now and the deadline. Personally I would like to see moves made, but I doubt that’s the reality. They’re currently looking for 2 defenceman and at least 1 top 9 forward but the market prices are high right now for them. Plus as Treliving said on the Kyper and Bourne show - he doesn’t have a lot of assets to work with in terms of picks and prospects (thanks to Dubas). Tricking is the type of guy who believes more in building the team in the off-season and making tinkering moves during the season so I think that negates any big trade ideas right now. They’re focusing on second tier guys that may come cheaper (I’ve heard Lyubushkin’s name a lot around the team as 1 option).
Most teams have been asking for high quality assets in any trade because no one likes helping Toronto ever. Treliving really wants to hold onto the 2024 1st round pick and Easton Cowan is off the table completely. Aside from those 2, anything is really available. Minten will be a tough move, but I know his name and Niemela were talked about in Flames trades for Zadorov and Tanev but it never worked out because Flames ownership refused to retain 50% on both Zadorov and Tanev (Toronto only tried getting both in the same deal and never asked just for Zadorov). That’s the other hold up from big trades is the cap and the Nylander situation. Until they know more about Nylander’s future, it’s tough to make a deal with any player having more than this season on their deal because they don’t want to jeopardize losing Nylander over a trade. It also depends on what they decide to do with Samsonov but that’s a story in its own. Treliving seems to be more willing to move the 2024 1st if he gets 2 guys of need rather than just 1 rental.

When it’s all said and done, trades seem tough or too much to make for Toronto this year so personally I’d be shocked if they make more than 2 trades. Don’t quite me of any of this, but it’s from a reputable source. Things can change any day though
