Description
Just had a thought

Rangers getting Tarasenko at half the cap hit (from Ottawa) is currently illegal since he was on their reserved list up until June 30th, therefore a full calendar year hasn’t passed yet where they can only acquire him at the full 5 million.

BUT…suppose a 3rd party team acquired him first at 50% /2.5 from Ottawa…in turn trading him to the NYR with no retention..:so in essence the 3rd party is taking on 50% instead of the usual 25%.

Is this illegal? And do you catch my drift in this? 🤔

That is what's referred to as cap circumvention.

In all seriousness I believe Phi and Car had something similar with DeAngelo and they had to wait it out.

Under normal circumstances, yes they can, but since he was on the roster last season with another team retaining salary the only way they can trade for him is at full cap hit.

Philly ended up buying out TDA and Carolina signed him later, but their trade got held up cause of retained salary.

See I know what you’re saying, but this retainment would have nothing to do with the rangers. They aren’t involved in that part

The league worked it into the CBA to prevent cap circumvention. Let a player go just to bring him back later and have someone else pay him. Its more about the player having his salary retained somewhere, not which team is paying it, if that makse sense. Seravelli (hope thats the correct spelling) was talking about it on a podcast this morning.

We’ll see what happens. He’s probably the best fit but worst cap hit unfortunately

I think my favorite most sensible trade for them is- Dowd and Pacioretty. It fits, we can keep 23 players and the cost shouldn’t be crazy high to get them. Dowd is a lavy favorite I heard so him by himself is possible imo, and they get two playoffs with him
