New Roster 202425

Created by: Egregious
Team: 2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 7, 2024
Published: May 7, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
- Marner deal fits both Vegas and Toronto's needs - Hanafin makes Theodore expendable, forward core is aging out - Leafs have been looking for a top defenceman for the past few seasons - If Marner's going to waive his NMC, it'll probably be for Vegas.
- Goaltending is Voodoo so rotate through a few league min options and hope Woller's a starter or that somebody gets hot.
- Under-the-radar a very strong UFA class. Roy, Montour, Carrier, DeMelo, Miller all good options for D. Having Theodore in that 2LD spot allows us to put McCabe with Reilly.
- UFA forward picture isn't too clear but 13m is good enough to get a strong depth option, re-sign domi or bert, and chase one of the top options like guentzel, lindholm, stamkos, teravainen or even reinhart if there's a deal to be made. I'm not a fan of moving marner for the sake of it, but if some of these forwards make it to free agency you could make back his value right away. Just depends how much value he has because of his NMC for the Theodore trade.

People keep missing the elephant in the room. Rielly is a 2nd pairing d-man that should never be on the ice in d-zone faceoff. He should be on the #2 PP unit as well. 11yrs to develop a slapshot and one-timer in the off-season. Great players try to improve on their weaknesses, Rielly is neither and should have been shipped out a longtime ago.

Yeah that's what I was thinking for this trade - have him and Theodore acting as 1A, 1B top defensemen to shelter each other because there's no way of us getting a true number 1 outside of the draft. I totally agree with what you're saying though. Reilly's performance last year for our victory against Tampa was a huge clutch that took away a lot of the heat he was getting that regular season. Only reason that discourse didn't come back is because McCabe is unreal and shouldered some tough matchups. No way the organization is ever trading the dude though, love him as a guy as well. To be fair as well our systems have been a pretty awful fit for him, we should've kept with being a run and gun team instead of making the 13th forward try to play bruins-style defense.
