Toronto fans need to come back to reality. You won't get a package like that for Marner, it just won't happen. Extension or not. Look at the Jack Eichel trade as that's the most recent comparable.

Marner is a great player and worth a lot to any franchise, but in a trade for a player of his caliber you never get something like this. Especially with how Toronto has ruined his value with their ineptitude in the playoffs, and Marner's own inability to be anything other than just okay in the postseason. And I'd be stunned if Marner gets signed to an extension if he is traded. His agent is Darren Ferris who likes to get his guys to free agency to cash in. So whoever trades for him would most likely be doing it as a rental, with the expectation they would try and resign if possible, but look at his other client, Sam Bennett. Great year in Florida, a great fit, but still going to free agency by the looks of it.

You'll get an NHL veteran who's ready to play, a high upside prospect, and couple of picks in a package, and Toronto fans will berate their management for the poor return, but the truth is this guy just doesn't have the value you think he does.

I’d point to the Erik Karlsson trade to SJ for a comparable. Ottawa got back 3 Young players with some experience, B+ prospect (Norris), 2nd rounder and a 1st.

You can use that as a comp, but the issue is that trade in hindsight was terrible. So why would someone make a similar trade now if the comparable didn't end favorably for the team trading for the guy. Not to mention Karlsson carried those Senator teams by himself including in the playoffs where he reached a conference final on a messed up ankle. Marner has been surrounded by other great talents such as Matthews, Nylander, Rielly, and even Tavares and still hasn't had a 100 point season or won any personal accolades. Karlsson already had two Norris trophies when he was traded and was the captain of that Sens team.
