24-25 Avs Hopium

Created by: Hi_Flyers
Team: 2024-25 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: May 23, 2024
Published: May 23, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Re-signed depth UFAs (Trenin+Duhaime) on pretty much identical AAV deals bc I liked them but idk they aren't worth that big a pay raise IMO. Re-signed Drouin and Mittelstadt, then got funky and got the Avs' 2025 3rd rounder back to use on a Josh Mahura offersheet because I let Walker go in UFA and in my 30 seconds of research on depth D replacements I got overly attached to him (pls be nice idrk how rfas work). This is also assuming Landeskog returns to the lineup with LOC and that Nichushkin is either traded or stuck in rehab purgatory or whatever else you want it doesn't really matter because it's a fustercluck for Avs management right now.

Additional Details:
Really just want the 2025 3rd rounder back for the Mahura offersheet, idk if it will even be needed in the end if FLA just lets Mahura so they can re-sign bigger fish. Feel free to substitute Nichushkin with whichever combo of picks or prospects NSH would be interested in exchange for the pick, idrc.
NSH
  1. Nichushkin, Valeri
Additional Details:
As the saying goes, "Third rehab's the charm". But even if Nichushkin comes back from rehab at 100% I don't see the Avalanche locker room being able to able to trust him, he likely has to get moved in some way. So if not like this then some other way, but really it's impossible to know for now so again, substitute in whatever trade/buyout/LTIRetire/contract termination your heart desires.

I mean I have him on LTIR just bc MacFarland said they can't technically terminate his contract but for all intents and purposes it opens up his $6.125 mil cap hit for this. Was thinking of messing around to see what letting Walker walk could do to make the other contracts more reasonable, but I'm less knowledgeable on D-men in general and depth D in particular, so idk who they might target to replace him. Having a rookie and some random LD on that bottom pair is not looking too good for the Avs' D-core depth next season.

this is generally what I'd like to see the Avs do. Figure out the Nuke cap situation later when and if he is eligible to return.

I don't see a reason to bring back both Trenin and Duhaime, those kind of players are a dime a dozen at the TDL, and the WAR level is not high enough to make a difference in the regular season. I liked both. Trenin isn't a center - he was fine at it and can take a faceoff, but the Avs would be smart to start the season with one of their AHLers there - Wagner, Pavel, Ivan Ivan would all be fine. No hate on Trenin, would take him back as a winger and a 5th C option.

he was a great PK "center" in that yes, he took faceoffs.

I'm much more pro-Trenin than Duhaime, who couldn't PK and basically was a faster Macdermid that was less willing to fight
