... 2025 UFAs: Adin Hill signs a two or three year extension on July 1st 2024 to remain in Toronto as Woll's tandem partner. Shea Theodore signs a career-closing long-term extension with Utah.
Toronto: Acquires and extends Stanley Cup winning goaltender Adin Hill to partner with Woll for a few years. It isn't the kind of "big game hunting" indicated by the Leafs, but $4.9m on your 1A is probably a price that suits that team better right now than something like Markstrom's $6m. With the $14.4m in cap space they have after this trade, they re-sign Timothy Liljegren at $3m per year for three years, bringing him to 28 when he can sign a longer term deal with a higher cap ceiling. They can re-sign Joel Edmundson for another year or two at $2.5m per year. They bridge Nicholas Robertson at $2.75m per year. With the remaining $6.15m in cap space after those signings, they bring on Chandler Stephenson for four or five years around $5m per year, and lastly re-sign RFA Connor Dewar for around league min. Cowan starts on a gritty but scoring-capable third line, lots of offense and depth to spread around.
Toronto 2024-25:
Hill - Woll
Rielly - McCabe
Benoit - Liljegren
Edmundson - Timmins
Webber
Knies - Matthews - Marner
Robertson - Tavares - Nylander
Cowan - Stephenson - McMann
Dewar - Kampf - Jarnkrok

Vegas: Gains the cap space they need to re-sign Marchessault, while obtaining from Toronto an underrated bottom six player in Pontus Holmberg and a guy in Alex Steeves who ought to have an NHL shot any time now given his AHL performance in 2023-24, and from Utah a decent power forward in Crouse, A guy who I think is a somewhat promising NHLer in right hand D-man, 6'4" Michael Kesselring, and the 6th overall selection in the 2024 draft. With the $11.8m in cap space they have after this trade, they re-sign Marchessault for three years at $7.5m per year, sign UFA goaltender Cam Talbot for one year at $1.5m to 1B for Logan Thompson, re-sign Michael Amadio at $1.5m per year, and sign newly acquired RFA Kesselring at around $800k or so for a couple of years. Vegas drafts their next big thing right hand D-man with the 6th overall pick (if Levshunov isn't available, then one of Parekh or Yakemchuk).
Vegas 2024-25:
Thompson - Talbot
Hanifin - Pietrangelo
McNabb - Kesselring
Hague - Whitecloud
Hutton
Barbashev - Eichel - Marchessault
Crouse - Hertl - Stone
Amadio/Holmberg - Roy - Howden
Holmberg/Amadio - Cotter - Kolesar

Utah: Is going to be going for it probably really quickly in a new city with new ownership looking to make an impact. They send L Lawson Crouse, RHD prospect Michael Kesselring and the 6th overall selection in 2024 to Vegas in exchange for the 19th overall selection in 2024, D Shea Theodore (with extension on the way), C William Karlsson and F Pavel Dorofeyev. They need a better center ice position and gain that in Cup winner Karlsson, still a 30 goal and 60 point scorer and I think has another three or four high quality years in him before petering out around 35 years old. His age and the 13 spots dropped in the draft is why I added young forward Pavel Dorofeyev, 13 goals and 24 points in 47 games in 2023-24 and just 23 years old, probably a good candidate for a 3rd line job at some point.
After this trade, they have $36.4m in cap space: they re-sign Sean Durzi long-term at $6.25m per year, bridge Moser at $2.75m per year, re-sign Valimaki for three years at $2.5m per, sign UFA Jake DeBrusk for five or six years at $5.75m per year, re-sign Liam O'Brien at league min, sign UFA Brett Pesce for six or seven years at $6.5m or $7m per year, bridge RFA Victor Soderstrom at, say, $1m per year (Utah fans correct me if I'm wrong, but he'd need to clear waivers to be sent down next year right? So best he be given that 3rd pair job next to steady defender Valimaki?), sign a cheap depth RHD to spot off Soderstrom if that's possible and/or required. Josh Doan spends time in the AHL fine-tuning his game even more, and if he proves that he just can't stay down there because he's too good, then Nick Schmaltz could be dealt to make room for him, probably getting a pretty decent return (like maybe another young center from a team needing scoring now that can't wait).
Lastly, there is a trade with Boston (not seen here obviously - see the follow-up thread) that sees G Karel Vejmelka, C Barrett Hayton and the 19th overall selection in 2024 that they got from Vegas, sent to Boston for Linus Ullmark (who comes with an extension agreed upon, and only if he waives of course) and Boston's 2026 2nd round pick. Boston let's Bussi simmer in the AHL for one more year, and uses their leadership and organizational culture and experience to propel Hayton to what he was drafted so high to be, even if it takes some time - he could grow into Coyle's replacement, for instance, as a time-line guess. When William Karlsson's time is up in Utah, Conor Geekie should be on the scene to take over for him. In the meantime, new owner guy hopes they compete WITH Karlsson. Utah uses their riches of 2nd round picks in 2024 and 2025 to move back up into the 1st round of 2024 (hey Lamiorello, want two 2nd round picks and a 3rd round pick for the 20th overall in 2024?)
Utah 2024-25:
Ullmark - Ingram
Theodore - Pesce
Moser - Durzi
Valimaki - Soderstrom
UFA 7th D-man
Keller - Cooley - Schmaltz
Maccelli - Karlsson - DeBrusk
Carcone/Dorofeyev - Bjugstad - Guenther
Dorofeyev/Carcone - McBain - Kerfoot
O'Brien
