VAN?

Created by: JohnPance
Team: 2017-18 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 22, 2017
Published: Aug. 22, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
After this year the Sedins are gone and Vancouver has an extra 14 million cap space and could easily take on Staals contract and since there is only a few NHL worthy defenders on VAN, Staal might even play for them for a bit. Of course he would have to waive his NMC which I dont think he will (unfortunately). This trade only works with the 1st round pick going back. I did not select 2018 because Lundq will still be playign top minutes and NYR will still be competing in 2017-18 and probably have a low (25+) pick in 2018 draft. After 2018, Nash is gone, Lundq will be 37, and I think the team will be blown up. Makes sense to make it 2019 draft to get rid of a toxic contract that a team that is years away from being competitive could use the pick. Also Cole Cassels is a long shot for the NHL but he is from Hartford, CT and thats where the NYR farm club plays. Win Win

Doubt a rebuilding team like Vancouver is interested in Marc Staal even at $4.2 million and why? Would Staal waive his NMC for a rebuilding team like Vancouver any ways.

Canucks management made it clear this off season they do want some vets around while the kids mature, hence their reluctance to move Edler and Tanev. In which case, if they could move Edler, that would make room for this trade. That said, WSH might be more desperate to move Orpik's cap hit at the deadline and he doesn't have a NMC and only 2 yrs remaining so that might be better. If the Canucks do start accepting some cap dumps for picks/prospects, I'd prefer they keep it to 2-3 years remaining. Then again, I guess it all depends on the payment coming back.
