The Replacements

Created by: TML_GM
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 20, 2017
Published: Nov. 20, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Seems pretty straight forward:

UFAs: Fehr, Polak, Moore, JVR, Bozak and Komarov all allowed to walk...

Leivo with his new 1 year extension plays LW with Kadri. Brown moves up to play RW in the top 9 full time.

Soshnitkov gets Brown's spot at 4RW (his old spot), Plays PK as well.

Nylander moves to C to replace Bozak, gets sheltered minutes to start like Matthews did in year 1. Marleau plays LW for defensive reliability and the option to swap to the middle when/if Nylander struggles.

Kapenan gets his deserved promotion to top 9. Plays on Nylander's RW. Gets both 2nd unit PK and 2nd unit PP time.

Marner takes Nylander's spot as Matthews' RW.

Gauthier and Aaltonen promoted from the Marlies to battle for 4C spot, Gauthier likely to win for his PK ability. Aaltonen gets the press box, but can fill in at any forward position with injuries.

Johnsson gets promoted to be the new Leivo. Top 9 capable forward who sits in the pressbox until a spot opens due to injury/trade.

D remains the same. Carrick gets a short bridge deal at low cost. Rosen gets called up to be the spare D, might rotate in on occasion to rest some of other D.

Sparks beats out Pickard and McElhinney for the backup job at camp.

Roughly 10M dollars in cap to play with for deadline acquisitions or for a big splash one-year signing.

Marlies: Grundstrom, Liljegren, Dermott, Bracco all given more time to develop into the next wave of replacements in 1-2 years.

Leivo isn't quick enough or good at defense enough to be on the matchup line in my opinion

Love this! Heard some rumours the Leafs would like to bring KHL Igor Ozhiganov, like they did with Zaitsev, for the third pairing instead of Carrick. Would be great to have some good depth at the back end!

This may be true, though he does bring a good cycle game/board play and smart passing. He's certainly faster than Komarov.

One of the things that makes the Kadri checking line so successful is the lack of time they actually spend defending in their own zone. They generate turnovers and then drive play into the offensive zone more often then not, forcing the other team's top line to play defense instead of offense.

Thanks.

I know about the Igor Ozhiganov rumors as well, and he's an intriguing idea. Mature RHD that will come on a 1-year ELC contract. I just don't think there is enough there to pen him to the lineup just yet. That said, I'm all for free assets with potential.
