Filip Mesar Scouting Reports

Mesar is easy to identify. The Canadiens first round (26th) pick in 2022 is always in motion hunting offense. Mesar is a solid skater who is a threat off the rush and scores goals a variety of ways. He has a good release and the ability to score off the weak side flank on the power-play. He also has some elusive net drive when he sees an open lane. The 5'10 1765lbs forward plays a generally light game physically. He's a skill player who isn't as comfortable along the wall and in the trenches.

On any given night, at the junior level in Kitchener, he has the skill to be a difference maker and take over games offensively. Has the ability to play quick and fast. Fantastic puck touch. He can beat opponents coming off the boards or in transition 1vs 1. In overtime he values the extra time and space playing 3vs3 Very little push back / bump to his game. Defensive detail and commitment ranges wildly. There will be nights he drives coaches crazy with his lack of push on the back check and in his zone. Offense wins out. Can't teach his skill set. The rest of his game will need to evolve as he matures. Has to play elevated role and be used on the PP.

Creative. Really good stick. Doesn't take time to make plays on the PP. Sees options developing and executes. Can be a threat off the rush. Quick in transition when he identifies open ice and chance to create. Defensively he has a long way to go with his defending on the smaller ice. His element is offense so he does cut some corner. Additionally he is a light player who doesn't battle in the trenches. Line mates do heavy lifting.

An undersized quick, fast, and skilled forward who plays his off-wing.
Filip is dangerous off the rush. He transports the puck effectively and looks to create offense. At times he will use the entire width of the ice off the attack which makes him more difficult to defend but also a challenge to skate with on on the same line. On the PP he is equal parts distributor and shooter. His opens up from the flank and has a quick release. He's light along the boards and in traffic. Line mates will have to do the heavy lifting. He is not a player who will extend plays in the hard areas. Pure offense. Lacks detail defensively.
The kind of player who values space. Off the rush he uses the entire width of the ice then uses his quickness to jump to the middle of the ice and get pucks to the net. On the PP he is equal parts distributor / shooter coming from the weak side. Not the kind of player who will extend plays in the hard areas. Quick release in traffic is attractive element. Easy to identify is potential upside.
