Joni Jurmo Scouting Reports

Jurmo was originally selected in the 3rd round (82nd) by Vancouver in 2020
At the end of the 22/23 season he appeared to be improving in several categories - including execution with the puck, skating on straight lines, and generally making more plays / launching the attack via outlets
His 23/24 season hasn't gone as well.
Jurmo is a big body who, in his current form, is best described as a 'Defensive D'. His approach is very simple. He uses his size, and reach, to his advantage in his zone. He's 'in the way' disrupting the flow of his opponents. His small area game has not gone to another level. There is room for significant improvement with his tight turns, continuation pace when pivoting, and jump to the wall / back to his crease.
At this stage Jurmo adds organizational depth and could become a recall defenceman in time. He will never produce much offense, but he's a competes consistently and takes up space.

Jurmo is trending in a positive direction. He is more confident with the puck. He is taking more risk transporting the puck on his own / escaping pressure with his zone exits / making some plays off the rush / joining the play. His first three steps have room to improve. Same goes for his small area tight turns / edges, but overall he is a solid skater for his stature. Jurmo leans 2-way 'D' on projection. He will, occasionally, chip in some secondary offense with his distributing. He is not a shooter / goal scorer or player who will be used on the power-play. Although capable of being used on the penalty kill - he does not PK in Liiga. Trending up.

Big body defender who averages over 16:00 TOI in Liiga
Deployed mostly at ES. Rarely being used on the PP. Does not PK at Jukurit
When his timing is on, he closes effectively on opponents and can kill plays along the boards.
His long reach is an asset.
Skating is not an issue on straight lines. Small area quickness and agility will need to improve for NHL game. Capable with the puck. Outlets pretty well. Sound hockey IQ overall.
