He's used in all situations and continues to skate at NHL pace. His role on the PK is second unit.
Play driver at times. Shooter on the PP. Generally responsible defensively, but like all players he has moments where he could be more dialed in.

Smith's ice time, and role with the Penguins, has ranged at times this season.
His overall TOI has averaged 16:16 for the year - 13:30 at ES and 1:45 on the PP.
He generally doesn't see the ice on the penalty-kill, but coming out of the break he was used as a depth PK versus Winnipeg.
Smith skates well, he can be a threat off the rush on occasion, sets up net-front/middle bumper on the PP and the ability to provide better than secondary scoring. His 8G-12A in his first 41GP with the Pens is less than ideal for what the organization was hoping to get out of Smith.
Good release. Generally aggressive directing pucks on net when he sees a lane. Doesn't provide a ton of push back physically - only credited with 23 hits and 11 shot blocks.
Signed through 24/25. Contract carries a $5.0M AAV that is armed with a 10 team no trade list this season - and an 8 team not trade list in the final year.
Leaning third-line forward more than second line forward at this stage of his career.

Continues to play with pace. Can be a threat off the rush. Has the hockey sense to find quiet ice / open lanes in the offensive zone.
Used in all situations last season. Averaged 16:58 TOI. Credited with 69 hits and 32 shot blocks. Motion player who disrupts the play by getting in shooting lanes or jumping to loose pucks ahead of opponents. There are nights he looks like he should be a 35 goal scorer. There are also nights his detail ranges and his energy could go to another level.
