Peeke to Van not for Garland
I'd rather do this than Garland with retention. Plus they can send Robinson down for more cap space

Four players who are, at best, injury call-ups. Sure. Why not?

You have it all wrong. If they are 100 pt pace, that first round pick is checking shipping rates because it's as good as gone!!

i agree, great example. let the team play the season see where they're lacking.
TDL would be to gain assets and lose contracts.
address shortfalls in FA or next years deadline.

This team, even with subtractions, is still the textbook definition of the mushy middle.

Possible Medium-Term Fit
I did read your description about the trade happening at the deadline, but unless he's put up a PPG season then I'd imagine you could get Garland for a lot less than a 1st. Right now VAN would likely give him away just for the cap relief.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BeautifulIdiot</b></div><div>Jim Benning?
I think that going into it with that attitude is the wrong way to go about it, if you are thinking “oh he’s going to be good for 3 years, serviceable for 5 and a anchor for the last 2” you are setting yourself up for failure. There were no contracts with this last FA period that you look and say “this is going to be horrible at the end”</div></div>
I think one also has to wonder if there is a Carolina Effect with their defensemen, because like Burns and Skjei were both trending as like "fine if unremarkable" defensemen at the time they joined the Canes and now both are putting up like easy clear cut top of the lineup numbers on both sides of the puck. Wouldn't be a shock if that dips off as soon as they leave (though, in fairness, it didn't with Hamilton, although I would have said he was a top pair defenseman when he went to the Canes)

You are trying to get an MVP calibre, Selke candidate #1 C. There is nothing that he cant do, he shoots, he is a playmaker, he kills penalties, he blocks shots and throws crushing hits. Cody Ceci still hasn’t shaken off the hit. If you want him, quantity is a component, but the value comes from the quality</div></div>
yes I agree, he's very valuable, and maybe more would be required. Petterson has the leverage though, if he says I'm not signing in vancouver beyond 1 year, the value Vancouver can get back drops significantly.

Bidding for Petey
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BeautifulIdiot</b></div><div>I dont think that you can say that for sure, I would argue the supporting cast role again but if you dont agree with that I would say that Petey is better defensively. Petey was injured his age 22 year and he was also in a pandemic, so I think that it is not out of the question to ask why he wasn’t lighting it up. I think that the best thing to go off of will be coming up this year. Hughes was feasting on the PP this year, and didnt show up on the PK score sheet where Petey scored less on the power play, showing that he has more to give, and scored on the PK.</div></div>
I say this with as much respect as possible, but you're homer-menatlity is blocking your vision. I really don't know how to say that a nicer way lol.
If you open the supporting cast discussion, then...
Is McDavid really not going to be that good on a team without Draisaitl?
Is Sid really not going to do what he does if he doesn't have Jake?
You get my point. It's a poor argument to make. The only real context a supporting cast can be useful for is for players who are in supporting roles/complimentary players, and goalies. Players at the level of Brayden Point? No way. Also, while VAN hasn't been a great team, it's not like Pettersson has been playing with a bunch of nobodies lol. He's had has some really great talent surrounding him.
Hughes is a better player than Pettersson and while it's not a huge gap right now, the gap will continue to grow as it has the last few years. Honestly, I'd say 95% of the people who would make an argument that Pettersson is better than Hughes are VAN fans.

Columbus can easily outbid just about anyone even with Fantilli and Jiricek off the table. Don't be greedy.
That said, can't see either side making the move.

Look at Pettersson's numbers two years ago when he was 22 and compare them to Hughes (22) now. Massive difference. This past year Hughes and Pettersson were almost statistically tied in points with Hughes getting the better of goal-scoring.
As far as their defensive games go. Hughes is also ahead of where Pettersson was at 22. Barring injuries to either play, Hughes likely will leapfrog Pettersson this year.</div></div>

lmao. you can set the bar as high as you want, but no one is going to meet that type of ask. if you insist on fantilli, you're eliminating the bidder that has arguably the deepest bag of assets.
at some point you have to take the best offer on the table. otherwise you're gonna be left holding the bag when petey hits UFA. good luck.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BeautifulIdiot</b></div><div>It would depend then on the 24 pick placement, if it is top 3 that would be one thing, but if MTL makes progression then it wouldn’t be worth it.</div></div>
Possibly, i don't know for sure. I feel like habs would have some sort of protection with the pick. To be honest though, I doubt MTL & VAN are good trade partners for Petey, both teams should be looking at rebuilding. Montreal is already rebuilding and should keep going that way for at least this and next season, not move their 1sts and instead add some.
For Vancouver, can't say I know what they need but it seems like they've made a lot of meh decisions with their picks lately. Petey could indeed help getting some picks and prospects however i might see Buffalo as a better trade partner. They have more impactful fwd prospects than us, that's for sure.

Bear in mind he's the Canucks top center and the package should probably include a top 6 center (or at least capable of) coming back the other way. Your cast offs wont get it done.
